How long do PBEM games last? A IRL month to finish? I haven't done one of these yet. I am just curious what the normal running time for these are on average.

That really depends upon the game...Epic or scenario and how many humans

Yep, depends a lot. Consider these two extremes :
- epic games with 8 players : count probably 2 years (if they get finished)
- WWII pacific scenario : can be over in 2 months
These are probably the longest and shortest games. Of course they can take longer or be shorter if the play order is good, if the players are reliable, etc...
