Are members of our present culture subjected to propaganda? What kind?

What are the principal propaganda messages circulated today, and how are they disseminated? How effective has this propaganda been? Name popular modern films in which these propaganda messages have been promoted?

Which of the following best describes how and why you arrived at your present set of political opinions and political agenda?

1) Logical appraisal of the evidence.
2) Inherent qualities of my nature, character or intelligence.
3) The effects of propaganda or upbringing.
4) Pursuit of my agenda may result in personal advantage.

Now answer the same question about why your political opponents hold the opinions/agendas they do.

Do you think your opponents would agree with the way you answered just now? How do you think they would respond, if asked the very same questions about their own beliefs... and yours?

Propaganda has, is, and will always be used by all sides. Some sides are just better at disguising it as 'facts' than others.

Is one and one two?

All mentioned description did influence me!

Absolutely all media is propaganda. The closest you could get to "not propaganda" is CSPAN. Where you would still be hearing the views of people who've swallowed propaganda.

PBS is less propgandish than CSPAN.

CFC is a perfect petri dish for propganda. ;)

It's all over the freaking place!

You might as well call a commercial break a propaganda break. BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY, you NEED this, you WANT this. Pot is BAD, ciggarettes are BAD etc......

yes. that's why everybody on these forums would have you believe the true definition of a communist is 'satan's right hand man'.

The best example of propoganda I can think of is the claim that second hand smoke causes cancer. A blatantly false study about the correlation between second-hand smoke and cancer is the chief resource on second-hand smoke used by anti-smoking advocates and groups such as the AMA, American Lung Association, and the American Cancer Society. These outright lies are quoted by anti-smoking advocates ad nauseum to achieve their despicable goals, and it has worked. CA, NY, and DE, to name a few, have bought the propoganda and seriously restricted the freedoms of smokers and small business owners as a direct result of this propoganda. They have no doubt succeeding in convincing millions of other Americans as well, which is why public smoking bans are tolerated. This blatantly false propoganda has been accepted as fact, and our society as a whole has been damaged because of it.

I believe the tenets of Communism are rooted in re-distribution of wealth to ensure economic equality between every person. A Communist government controls all enterprise - from the media to the factories to the local adult bookstore, in order to completely control the flow of wealth between people. In true Communism, nobody really owns anything - all property and possessions are controlled by the government, for the ultimate goal of ensuring every citizen is equal economically. Quite a utopian ideal, but has proven to be an abject failure in practice.

I come to the conclusion that much of the political propaganda is actually a part of a culture. You could for ex. say that in general American's are more conservative than European's. You could say that the mass spread of those local culture's are mostly due to the mass media ,and the "propaganda" you hear is actually more what people think according to their ideoligy. You could say that these each culture has some fundamental value's that accumulate trough their mass media ,wich make's those value's more spread out localy. The masses of each country's people will be open to these value's and in time probably adopt them to a certain degree. And some people will even expand on them ,while other will critisize it more there were possible and adopt an other ideoligy.Everyone will adopt a idioligy that serves them best according to their needs ,even if you believe in equallity for everyone ,or rather in individuality.
In any case ,it's hard to say what ,between all the oppinion's ,is the treu best.Certainly none of them will be perfect ,or the issue's around them just wouldn't exist.
The perfect oppinion has yet to be invented. So between all the issue's that seperate them ,the concensus might be the logical best ,until we develop gouvermental system's that are relatively better. (Robotic's ,about 15 turn's at this rate ,we could go to maybe 10 turn's with more research? :) )

I fear the fact that a person like Osama Bin Laden is very effective in spreading his idioligy.Make's you wonder why so many arab's are receptive to it.

I have a really hard time believing there isn't enough convincing evidence that more than incidental contact with second hand smoke can cause cancer....at least not enough evidence to outweith the evidence that it doesn't. Can you link some reputable source substantiating your claim?

.....the American Medical Association, The American Lung Association and the American Cancer Society being no such reputable sources..... :D

Heard some good examples of propaganda today at the UN:

US says they have WMD

Iraq says they don't, and if you fought a war, you won't find them cause they don't exist.

So somebody is sending propaganda there.

Second hand smoke sure does cause cancer.
