Question:

Is there a way to force another Civ to overthrow its government?

I was in a situation yesterday where I had to conquer a large neighboring Civ but just wanted to get it over with quickly. Send in the spies! But when they attempted to incite a rebellion, it turned out this particular Civ was a Democracy, immune to revolutionary incitement from abroad. Doh! I tried to overthrow the government by conquering their capital, but to no avail. (This was later in the game.) I had to round up some troops and waste mucho time & $$$ doing it the old-fashioned way.

Any suggestions? :king:

AI democracy is immune to overthrow due to a city revolting for two turns. To test it, I once sent a river of spies to continuously destroy improvements in an AI democracy city - after 30+ turns in revolt, the government hadn't fallen.

Usually they only overthrow the gov't in preparation for a sneak attack...

The best way is to throw the coup yourself! Sack all their cities and institute the gov't of your choice!

In a game i played, i was right on the edge of winning, with only one pitiful Sioux city remaining, and i decided to have some fun. I went into cheat mode and switched myself to the sioux. After the game ended, I watched as the computer converted my democracy into fundamentalism, the back to democracy, then fundamentalism, about every ten turns. It maxed out the unit limit, and recalled all my settlers. If that's how the AI runs all the time, i think civII has lost it's challenge.
