pick your PG combat system

My guess: none of these.

These have no business in a civ-type game, especially one that is trying to model thousands of years of warfare, not just WW2.

Suppression effects? When there are no automatic weapons until the late 19th century? WTH?

I would agree that most of those are unlikely, but this one might be in:

* friendly fire: artillery (or flak) autmatically shoots first, when the unit next to it is attacked

Although I would not have described it as friendly fire.

For those not familiar with the system, in PG if you put an infantry (or tank, or whatever) unit next to an artillery unit, then when the infantry was attacked the artillery unit would offer supporting fire.

What this meant was that the artillery got a free shot (in Civ terms a first strike opportunity) before the combat started. After that it had no further impact on the battle, but since artillery was very powerful in PG (especially against infantry) it basically meant that you either had to accept heavy loses when attacking units supported by artillery or you had to try to take out their artillery first.

I could see something like this in Civ V, with catapults or archers supporting front line units in this fashion.

From that list I also don't see why ZoC (which has been in Civ before), aircraft units operating outside airfields for some length of time (also been in Civ before) or retreats couldn't be in.
