I personally like going after the toughest first, but basically, I try to crush whatever is handy....

... I crush the one who uses the word "b@$!c@\\y" first since they have no place in decent society let alone a computer game. Of course, if one were to make a whole phrase of it set off by commas, I go to the cheat and delete them.

Again, for all you youngsters out there, just say no!

I pick on the ones that are not spread out geographically, so it's easier to completely destroy them. Also, better if their cities are already big, with terrain improvements and city improvements. Strike with overwhelming force concentrated on a single city and consolidate fast.

I go for the ones on my continent, and if the continent is all mine, then just the ones I find first.

i often go for the one i find first but if i find a more powerful one on the way i destroy it

Priority of targets:

1) Closest and meanest -- If I’m on one rock with one civ nipping at me and another at peace, I’ll go after the bully pestering me. Of the ones pestering me, I’ll go after the closest.
2) If it is time to expand and I have two civs on my rock, both at peace and one with three cities, one with seven to my seven, I’ll take out the easy target first -- a basic rule of war being the overwhelming ratio of force makes the job easier. Getting in, out & over makes it close to a non-decision.
3) Has a wonder that I want. Getting a prize greatly increases the target desirability I once waited three turns for Zimbabwee to finish its second wonder (and the eighth in the game at that time iirc)…the next turn, two vet elephants rushed in to take the double prize.

Hey marmdukes,
basically, why don't you read a thesaurus?

My apologies Duke. As a paid writer, I deliberately used basically there to indicate that my standard strategy was to go after whoever was within reach.

Mea culpa

basically, why don't you ...

Spoken (written) like a true user!

As I have noted to others, you can save syllables or keystrokes by just using "like" or "umm", non-pseudo-intellectual versions of the same gramatical construct.

Unless, of course, you intended to express your derision of your audience, their being too stupid or your being to important to offer a full recitation of the subject.

... that someday all the white boys and girls and all the red boys and girls and all the yellow, blue, purple...

don't use them at all;)

I am frequently amused by attempts to fight against the windmills of poor internet-bulletin-board grammar.

Another "back on topic" note: some civs are more likely to follow tech paths that lead to "military" techs, such as Mongols, Greeks, Spanish, Japanese, and Russians. Others are focussed more on learning "civilized" techs, such as Babylonians, Aztecs, Persians, and Indians. Some of the "toughest" competitors are those that follow the middle path and race you to key science and happiness wonders. I have had trouble with the Americans, the Celts, and the Germans in these races, especially with the AI bonuses at Deity level.
