idea how Pirates work:
instead of the unit Pirateer you can build a unit named Pirate land unit that is cheap that can take controll of your own boats, when consumed the boat gets:
Can attack without trigger war
blockade for money
When outside your own waters 1% chance it turns barberian

Is that 1% every turn, so after 100 turns theres a high chance it will have, would need to revise my Poisson Method to work it out, but you get my point. Is your point such that you can turn other boats into Privateers not just the one unit?

I would like to see the ramifications of sending out privateers, perhaps a chance of getting caught if the civ you attack has the upper hand in espionage.

yes 1% every turn, not incresing with 1% per turn, but this is a suggestion, point is to have some kind of negative thing for using other boats as Pirateers

Yeah , this way , pirates never get outdated. Pirates do exist in the modern world to.

You could change it to incresing procentage depending on how long it been to sea for more realistic approach

I think the negative thing for pirates should be that they just aren't particularly strong compared to other boats of the same era; that and possibly a happiness penalty for supporting them.

 Pirates are supposed to be strong raiders! But the Penalty for supporting them would be good!:goodjob:

The Barbarians should have pirate ships also that just harrass your ships and disrupt your trade routes. They have galleys but they don't upgrade over time to more relevant naval units. Once optics is widespread, the barbs should also be given access to caravels and later pirate ships.

so wat your saying is that barbs could have battleships and destroyers?

Think he is thinking more like frigates and galleons! You might get modern pirates but they would be much more complicated than just giving barbarians destroyers. They would occur in areas of high corruption and would reduce trade route income. Perhaps a random event like bandits.

Ah! the good old days of pirates ruling the seas. Only if civilization's could also participate:spear: :traderoute:

There was a suggestion that instead of the Privateer you could build a pirate unit which you could attach to a ship, you would be able to attack anyone without declaring war and you would get the spoils from port blockades. However there would be a chance that the pirate would turn Barbarian.

Its in this thread, well IT IS THIS THREAD! buffalo did you miss the point?

Yeah...that's what I was talking about. Barb pirates having some kind of equivalent unit at least as strong as a caravel early and later having galleons that could land raiding parties and frigates. Destroyer barbs, well that would be crazy but if there was a barb city that was allowed to develop long enough and had access to oil. No, probably by the time you could build destroyers or even ironclads, the pirate threat would be pretty much over.

Though some sort of small-scale zippy modern armed gunboat should be available to twentieth-century barbarians/pirates; nothing that could compete with a destroyer, but still able to take an undefended transport.

Good idea, but, if all they have is a zippy gunship ,pirates in the 20th and 21st century would have little point to them.

Well they could disrupt trade routes by blockading undefended cities. There are still pirates these days you know!

well these pirates would be commissioned by Civilizations just so they dont need to declare war offically. So Pirates with destroyers wouldnt be unthinkable becouse the Civilizations would give them to them

:goodjob: Definatly! So pirates would have destroyer but they would be commisioned by Civs, what I meant was that Barb pirates would use gunships and what not.(Some pirates were never commisioned by a civ)

unless its Pirates that has "rebelled" from their CIV, thats why i have a % chance that would happen in hostile territory
