Pitboss BTS: The Angry Barbarians

Problem is, when armies come a little later those animals can be nice training for a 2nd promotion ;p

I have switched to AI as my position is hopeless. I am being attacked by axes and have just warriors myself and as I only have two size one cities I can't slave either. I have no strat resources and am hopelessly boxed in on all sides. So its a bit of a relief to be attacked :)

Oh well, when I saw that, I thought it was a little rude to quit the game like that, but if, in your position, you couldn't possibly do better than the AI would, I guess that's ok.

This is a brutal game...

Early expansion means death I think, better build an army first.

Exactly. Why settle 3 cities like Hoplosternum did without ensuring defence? Makes no sense. At least archery should have been researched first before expanding like that especially with angry barbs.

well, he was trying to secure the copper to be able to defend himself... if he didn't settle quick I could''ve taken than land(One of the few good spots nearby :p) unfortunately for him I got copper right next to my capital.

Hi Dan, with what do I build an army? And I only have two cities :p not three. Their small size was partly due to an event which reduced my capital down to one :(

Yes I should have got archery but it would not have saved me here against at least one improved axe. Without axes or chariots how would I fight off the barbs? So I am not sure researching archery before AH or BW was correct. The barbs were still animals at this stage.

And having at most just two marginal city sites nearby I could not sit in my no strat resource capital for long. I had three very close neighbours, Levgree was not the closest. Plus a mountain/hill area and a tundra area for barbs too :)

Still as its turned out I can't argue that I've played a bad strategy :p

Enjoy the game everyone :) I think raging barbs is fun option. But the really crowded map (and in my case lack of food/hilly surroundings, not sure if everyone has this or not) will mean some people will hardly see them. Apart from two narrow barb gaps (that I could plug with a unit or two) I would not have seen a barb in this game.

According to civstats you (or the AI) settled a city just previous turn. So you should have 3 cities if I've counted right. I'm not saying that the map and game settings aren't challenging though. Just that with these settings I wouldn't expand like that if I had just Warriors.

I dont know where you counted the 1st new city but he only had 2. Maybe he got a tech from a hut for what you thought was the 1st new city

nm he did have 3.

I did have a settler when I went AI but it was still in my territory. So the AI would have been able to build a third city. There were no strat resources in range so it would not have saved me.

As an event had reduced my capital to size 1 there would be nothing for me to do had I not gone AI. I could not slave (although the AI can do that anyway) and had no stock of military units to throw vs Levgre (or anyone else).

The reason for my expansion was my position. BW allowed me to slave and chop as well as revealing copper so was my first target. My scouts quickly revealed that there were at most three city sites I could get without war. One was taken before I got my first settler out. I went for the second as it had copper in its BFC although it was closer to a neighbour. With the copper being so far from me I decided to then research AH before archers. Horses would have saved me. Barbarians would not have been a factor apart from a small hilly coastal route and possibly the southern tundra edge (the third city site). So I was looking for strat resources to fend off or attack my neighbours. Sadly the horses were even further off - in the tundra/forest - than the copper.

I am not sure what I should have done differently. I did not send out settlers unprotected and was not sure if my neighbours were as crowded as me. Despite 'raging' I would have seen few if any barbs. None of the 3 city sites I could see seemed great so were not automatic targets (the copper one I went for had no food resources and was plains/forest/calander resources) and if my neighbours had open borders elsewhere they may have expanded away from me if only to keep the barbs off their capitals. So I felt I was in an early land grab/risk of being rush. Therefore I needed to see and get strat resources ASAP. So I researched them. I was not quick enough and the resources too far away unfortunately.

Enjoy the game everyone!

any chance I could get a reload to 1960?
missed that turn and couldn't move my mighty warrior into the capital, so I will die to barbs next turn

Ok. I'm reloading to 1960 right now.

Hum, now that I look at the save game lists (I don't know much about managing a PB game), I *think* I can reload it to right after DanDRidge's turn. That would save us some time. Can you play your turn right away afterwards?

Oh, the turn is right *before* DanDRidge's game... :( well, I think I can put the timer back to 24h so he can play his turn again.
