Plague of smileys in sigs ...

Should something be done about smileys in signatures?

You needn't look further than to my sigline to think this is a tad bit hypocritical, but I've been somewhat annoyed by the plague of smileys, particularly animated ones, in people's signatures lately. There are several people who have half-a-dozen or more apparently random animated avatars in their signatures, which I find distracting.

So what do people think of banning or restricting it? Personally, I'd like it restricted to up to three non-animated ones, but you had guessed that already.

I think it should be limited to something like 3 or so, I agree. I have also noticed some posters with loads of them in their sigs...

It's not so much the smileys that bug me. It's the big ones and the animated ones. And the big animated ones. Ok, they all annoy me.

And another thing: I don't understand why we can have animated smileys in our sigs, but not animated avatars.

The only animated things that I've seen in sigs are animated smilies... Two laughing smilies do not compare to the dancing girl avators...

I can't recall seeing anyone have a non-smiley picture in a signature for quite some time,

Because they aren't allowed here. :p

Ban, or restrict animated smilelies, especially more than 1.

You mean like:

I wrote the Applentice, the Applentice II and Feer Factor, although Feer factor was never used!

You fired! :p  :gripe: [pissed] :spear:

Yeah, I dislike that too. I think you should not be able to put animated ones in your sig (except maybe for the small ones like  for example).

I agree with Chieftess. Please ban anything but text from the signature, or if you decide on a different approach, at least restrict usage.

*goes to remove emoticon from sig*

edit: I mean all smileys in general - since restricting to disallow animated saves some bandwith, but restricting to disallow static (like Jesus...) saves a bit more bandwith. Besides - if you cannot live without an emoticon to deliver your thoughts, feelings, messages etc - you have a communication problem.
my humble opinion of course. I run a 1600k dsl line, so the bandwith issue is for the server and not myself :)

The C3C tag in your sig is part of the smilies collection.

@Dell: Two small smilies is nothing like 5 or more smilies in your sig. :p

The c3c tag is a RELEVANT "smiley" - which is not the case for the Jesus smiley, among others (took it as an example as I ve read a lot of Wizard's posts these days, and his sig is sometimes longer than his post, to the extent that I m sometimes a bit confused :crazyeye:

Well - we are civfanatics - thus the civ3, ptw and c3c icons are relevant.
reasons: easier to spot people to play with/against - in a SG, in multiplayer either online or in a pbem, etc.
At least that's my definition, and reason to support a limitation.

I also assume that this is in line with Thunderfall's efforts to remove all unnecessary attatchments, unused smileys - specifically to save webspace and provide a faster forum experience.

@Gogf:
Yeah i spotted LLXerxes' one as well. quite annoying.

i'd say restrict to non-animated smilies, and keep the old restrictions on size to weed out the big smilies too.

Yes because I have 5 smilies in my sig but I keep on editing it so that you are the only poster who sees them...

Sounds about right to me.
One of the reasons I quit checking in at 'Poly very often is the animated avatars. I think a couple of them are similar to that Japanese cartoon that gives people seizures.

Actually my sig is fairly short compared to most of the people who have a sig.. :p
