Planes and ships?

I've found that artillery is almost entirely useless. especially early in the game (catapults are horrible). i like to go in with fast moving units (knights, cavalry) and artis are just too friggin slow. and what's with not being able to kill troops by bombarding them? What? cannons and bombs dropped from planes can't kill people? ok. and yeah the fact that planes are so weak against battle ships?

The problem is that knights are too strong on defense. Why do they have the same defense factor as rifle-armed cavalry??? Make knights 5.2.2 forcing them to move with pikemen and cannon. Increase in Editor the bombardment strength of catapults and cannon. Make gunpowder era units stronger.

Besides all that, roads in enemy territory SHOULD be usable by invaders unless pillaged by the defending civ. Allowing the defender to use them, but not the attacker, is ABSURD - but not as absurd as bombers being unable to sink warships. :crazyeyes

Carriers can be effective if you use bombers more than fighters. I built a navy of about 50 ships and put a ring of ships around my whole conitinent, with carriers behind the ring. It was cool when the Persians got their butts whipped.

I've always found that if you're civ is spread out over several continents (AKA the "British" strategy ;) ) then bombers are a must. It's much quicker to deploy bombers than to send out transports of arty to deal with sudden "hotspots - and the longer range is important for cutting roads to slow down the enemy's reinforcements.

The AI almost always will use bombers to bombard the sh*t out of its enemy. Sometimes the AI doesn't even deploy troops and just uses bombers to destroy terrain improvements. So you should have enough fighters to combat these crazy bombers.

I like bombers... they're not great, but so easy to deploy to ANY city in one turn. Mass a bunch of bombers, and when some civ decides to attack, put them in city near his, and you'll have it down to rubble in no time :)

Then again, I go for destroying cities, not saving them. I like making enemy cities useless, not taking them over.

You know when you attack an enemy civ, and suddenly the entire continent's forces arrive to give you the 21 gun salute...Bombarding a cross-section of railroad will stop slower reinforcements, more sections will cause a one-turn delay for anything. When invading Greece I Nuked an entire section of America's land to prevent US and Greek reinforcements from reaching me for several turns. Can they cross the pollution with no slowdown or damage?.
