Play Now button and custom game button are gray and unclickable

Ok, to start I need to tell u that i am very new to civ 4(or and civilization version). Also, I have searched the forums and cant find this issue in here. I apologize if I missed it and posted a new thread on an old issue. i did the best I could to find it.
Civilization IV 1.74
Civ ver 174
save ver 103
build ver 1.7.4.0
PC stats:
AMD Athlon XP 1.6 ghz cpu(palamino)
1 gig DDR ram
128 meg ATI Radeon 9200 AGP 4 interface


2 days ago I bought and installed Civilization IV and updated with 1.74 patch.

I played a couple games part way thru, saved and started over as I learned more of the "how to" stuff. last night I played the american revolution scenario.
Now, when I load the game, the play now button and the custom game button are gray and unclickable. The other buttons ( load a game, play a scenario and custom scenario) work fine. I tried to uninstall the game and it won't work because of the patch.
How can I fix this? I want to play a new game with no mods or scenarios. I can't find anything on 2K games site.

Thanx for reply and the welcome. Awesome site u have here. I did get the game working though. Somehow the mod I used, had corrupted the 1.7.4 patch so I reinstalled the patch ontop of old install and all is well.
