One of the first major tasks we have identified while working on the new GOTM staff functions is that player names and general communications have been severely neglected over time.

We have a number of players who have been submitting games under a name that is not registered as a member at the CivFanticsCenter (CFC). We have already detected several examples where more than one player is submitting games under the same made-up nickname.

In December, we had to waste at least six hours of volunteer time tracking down players who submitted games that had technical probelms with the save files and over half of these were unregistered users or users who deliberately had the PM and email functions disabled. On top of wasting volunteer time, these "identity crises" delay publication of the game results and inconvenience all the other players.

SO we need to move to fix these problems and we will be putting the primary responsibility for fixing these issues on the individual players. Registration is free and only takes 5 or 10 minutes for the individual players but can save lots of wasted time for everyone involved.

Now through January 31st will be a transition time for players to identify themselves and get their naming issues and communications fixed. At the end of January we will begin excluding any games submitted by unregistered users.

There are several GOTM staff members who will be working these issues so please check the list below and contact the correct person:

1) Make sure you are registered to use the CFC forums and that you have a valid member name that will allow you to post messages in the forums. Avoid using any "goofy" characters in your member name as this can cause conflicts in other areas.

2) Check the email address for your user profile and make sure that the current email address is working to deliver email messages to you. The forums software keeps this address hidden but will still allow GOTM staff members to contact you internally if any game problems arise.

3) Check your user profile and make sure that Private Messaging is enabled and make sure you know how to send and receive a private message (PM).

4) Update your user profile to provide it with a little personality and to help us identify you if we have problems with any submit games.

5) Creepster has already been working this identity crisis issue up front for GOTM14 but if you fall into the catagory of "not knowing what your name is" then you might contact creepster at gotm_submit@civfanatics.net to make sure you do not fall in a crack.

6) Check the current listing of the global ranking on the GOTM website to see if there may be past games that you submitted as the wrong name or as bogus multiple aliases. If this might be you, contact matrix@civfanatics.net to get your past sins forgiven and fixed.

If you have any questions on how to accomplish these key set up functions, contact me by PM and I will work to get you fixed before the deadline.

By the end of January, we want to be certain that every player is a registered CFC member and that they have enable the internal PM adn email functions to support locating them easily if there are any questions about submitted games.

Any games submitted using uregistered player names will be excluded from all results for GOTM games in 2003.
