As another OS choice, I'm considering a linux verson - Lycoris Desktop/LX. I was wondering if there was a way of getting Civ3, and other PC computer games playing on it.

Any 32-bit windows emulation environment running in windows should allow you to play civ.

But has anyone tried it yet?

I will try one day - another damn project! :)

WineX is good, but probably not the best Windows "emulator". The different products available provide varying degrees of "accuracy". One of the best is probably vmWare, which requires you to own Windows (not necessarily have a bootable partition, but own it so it can be installed into its own "sandbox" that vmWare runs it in).

But, isn't vmWare limited in the graphical resolution that it can display since it doesn't directly use the video card? (just something I heard. Please abuse me if I am completely off base :D)

Oh yeah, price, forgot about that kind of thing. But I truely just test the software out. I don't use it anymore.

Damn damn damn, I'll never repeat it enough. VMWare definitely IS THE emulator to use. Since (unlike Virtual PC) it only emulates the real hardware of a pc, it's ver easy and absolutely 100%compatible with any PC emulated game, provided that your hardware is (I mean it should be compatible with the game if you installed windows on it).
And it does emulate a PC even better than a real PC.. I saw my former colleagues playing CS at work on a bi-proc PIII and since Linux was multi-proc optimised it ran the game faster than a windows based bi-proc would.
I also said many times that a VMWare "pentium 120 emulated" virtual machine with 100 emulated meg RAM would load WinXP faster than a realy PII@350Mhz and 128meg ram would! It's obviously paradoxical but it's the truth... My eyes witnessed that miracle.
Now, considering its price it might indeed be a tricky choice but if you're going to use it intensively, I don't think it's a waste. And well, if you have enough money to suscribe for broadband connection that shouldn't be a problem either ;)
