There are a couple of mentions on these boards of games played (and won) using only a single city. That seems an interesting challenge. Is this a scenario or just a self-imposed limitation? And what are the "rules?" For instance, do you have to win by building a spaceship (since conquering other civilazations without taking over their cities would seem awkward)?

Go to Apolyton's site, there's a link on this site I think, they have a link to a page with ALL the rules and a very lengthy guide

I know when I first started playing Civ, I played some games where I would build no more than 10 cities, because I thought that it was to much trouble to have more. From that point I easily got the idea that one city would be the best way to play civ - that way I only had to concentrate one the one and it could be the greatest city in the world. After a few games playing like this, and having completed king with one city with all 28 wonders in it, I started to finding it boring and once again began to populate the entire world. It easy to do on the lower levels - but on Emperor and deity it get rather challenging.
As to your question about rules there might exist some somewhere on the net, but I always played for a spacevictory!!!

A like to Paul's site for the rules and strategy guide for the One City Challenge is now bump to the top of the Other Civilization Sites forum. In threads on forums the challenge is usually abbreviated to "OCC" and "The Paulicy" refers to the strategy guide.

Did I mention that I love the spellchecker?

My first game with Civ I I played with the Babylonian. My first city was ofcourse Babylon, and I remember the spot exactly. I had two enemies: the Roman and French. I made "first contact" with the French around 1200 A.D., and I was very nice to them (I always am). After I got nukes, I destroyed them and then I went on wiping the Romans out. It was a nice game and I played it for 7 days.

We have an extensive guide about the OCC (One City Challenge) that was wrote by Stellar Converter. It's in the War Academy

Get ‘em up off me, ‘cause all we wanted harmony, been bombin’ ‘em. Yell up outta my ghetto, “I won’t settle,” get on my level.
