PLEASE add strategic view to BE

Exactly
They removed a pre-existing feature of the CivV Engine.
(Of course, that means they may have just removed the 'switch' and can reenable it.

Here's hoping they do (both for speeding up turn times and getting info more clearly.

I'm doing my utmost to get the word out there. I'll even take pitch controls so I can fix that angle problem or the assurance that enterprising modders can put it back in... or even inclusion in a patch or expac.

If it's more difficult than adding new icons for everything, does anyone know in what ways? It seems really simple in theory but everything seems simple in theory.

I don't know if you've gone through the source code but I personally don't know what's in the Civ V engine that went unused in Civ V. All of that stuff would be so called "pre-existing" features....I think it's goofy to suggest something got removed from an unreleased game.

That said, I feel for the people that need or want this feature. Would be nice if they could patch it in.

While I don't use it anymore because I got a better computer about a year ago, I really hope they put it back in, I wouldn't have been able to play CiV for years without it.

It would be nice if they put more effort into it too. The CiV strategic view was horrible when it came to religion for example (had to zoom in max to see it).

There are new features in Beyond Earth that would require significant changes to the strategic view -- most notably, the orbital layer.

Some time after the release of BNW when I was polishing up the summary page, I went back to look at the original vanilla pages on terrain and notes that I had put up images of the strategic view icons for the various terrain, which I hadn't done for any of the expansions, and I realized that this was because I hadn't pressed the strategic view button in about four or five years.

While I realize that there are a few people here who rely on it, it seems to me that this is a feature that is completely ignored by the vast majority of players.

My old laptop seemed to get worse over time at playing Civ5 to the point where it only functioned on Strategic View. That laptop then got fried and the replacement is more or less a downgrade. Given that, I really just need to get a desktop that can play it perfectly fine in any view, but Strategic View is definitely nice for those who use a bit more archaic technology.

Some things are more clear in strategic view. Also it can be quite useful in good systems, it reduces turn times significantly. (switch to strategic view before ending the turn, then switch back in your turn.)

I switched it on once in vanilla Civ V and didn't find it useful.

I did use strategic layer in Civ V in large, crowded maps with a lot going on. It helped me see the big picture with less strain on my PC. Turns could be taken quicker from strategic layer on big maps too.

I play entirely in strategic mode. My computer can mostly handle the graphics, but it's so much easier for me to parse the terrain without all the graphical doodads.

This.

After both watching hours AND playing BE at firaxicon i STILL can't ever locate alien nests, they're so hard for me to see, especially when covered by miasma... thank god for resource icons and yields else id never be able to tell what the terrain im standing on is, but still with out strat view it's so hard for me to plan cities and wars, i can barely see what im doing and my turns take a lot longer.

Though just as i did with civ5, i'll be happy playing non strat-view for a long time because of the beautiful asthetic, i just want to be able to swap between views when i cant figure out the terrain :l

I too have trouble making out nests in the videos I've seen so far, even on HD quality.

I play Civ 5 almost exclusively on the normal view, but I recall when I had a laptop that lagged on it and needed strategic view.

I'm hoping that they add it in for those players mostly.

Second this. I too play exclusively in strategic view (with visible grids), which is so much clearer. I have almost no use for the perspective view, or the nice graphic. If it were up to me, a Civ game entirely without 3D graphic would be equally (if not more) enjoyable for me.

I was also not happy that saving and loading a game automatically returned me to the perspective view (Civ IV remembered being in strategic view, I believe). To lose strategic view entirely in Civ BE would be a huge disappointment for me.

Count me in as another who hopes strategic view can be added back at some point. Though my eyesight is ok, I have other health problems that make life difficult in different ways, so I sympathize with those who need it. I hope they have built in workarounds for this issue. I also use it occasionally in Civ V because it makes some resources easier to find on the map.
