Welcome to Civfanatics :band:

Try a complete reinstall:
(its a re-post from a few dozen other threads - but I don't feel like recompiling it ;))

just omit anything for expansions you don't have
If you do not have BtS you should patch to 1.74 and 2.13 ONLY after installing 1.61 and 2.08 respectively.

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Vanilla
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS) (note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Vanilla, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.13 (download it fresh from here).

Thx for the info
I don't have warlords....is that my problem????
I just have civ 4 in CD format and BTS in cd format.
Thx for the help

OK...when U say
Install Vanilla, immediately patch it to 1.61
do U mean patch before I open the game...or do I open it then exit...then patch.
I know this sounds so basic to U pros ...but I am new to this
Thx so muchfor the help

That depends on what OS you have. If you have Win2K then just to make sure I would restart the computer and start up a game take a first turn and quit then patch. You may not have to do that, but you can try it either way. Actually I think both win2K or winXP should be alright so perhaps all you would have to do is just patch it up. Older OS's like Win98 you would have to restart the computer and start up the game to let the computer know for sure that it was installed then install the patch update. The newer OS's are not really like that, and actually I can not remember now restarting my computer with win2K or winXP but to say for sure, I can not. Since I did not do it all at once, and it was done over several weeks or days or whatever, I guess that other post probably knows, so just patch it. If it does not take, then start-up the game and then quit and patch it up.

you should not need to start the game or restart the computer and I would not do it if I had to do the reinstall just because of the time it takes - but it won't hurt either.
What probably would hurt is installing BtS before patching to 1.61 - since that tries to patch to 1.74 and that patch needs 1.61 to work properly.
Also if you had warlords I would not install that before patching to 1.61 (just as a note to whoever else reads this :))
