Polish Civ - Discussion

I'm sorry that the leaderheads you asked for didn't turn into masterpieces through the .dds conversion. Did you not notice what I did with the leaderheads (scroll up)? Sorry I'm just feeling ignored here -- no one said anything.

Beggers can't be choosers.

Oh sorry, didn't notice that. Thanks for your work. :)

I will incorporate them until we get animated ones.

What we need is:
- Polish flag (should be relatively easy to make - white eagle on red background),
- Hussaria unit - probably will require more work,
- leaderheads, preferrably animated.

If it is any help, I think for Sobieski we could actually use Bismarck only that:
1) change his moustache to black, instead of grey
2) remove his helmet
3) give him an armour instead of uniform
4) replace background with Louis XIV background (Versailles looks a lot like Willanow palace, built by Sobieski).

Of course, I cannot stress strong enough that anyone willing to help with any of the above would be great.

I may help for the polish flag, just PM me a picture of this kind of eagle
for the hussaria unit, i need a picture too, but it will be a skinned existing Unit
for the animated leader, you can't remove anything (but feather on moctezuma and helmetfur, beard on Genghis, so far). It's not that possible to make an armor too...

basically, for leaderheads, we can change colors and that's all. Go to these threads to see what can be (basically) done.

As far as the flag goes, my humble opinion is that one would only need to reshade the Prussian flag Rhye did from black on white to white on red. Being Prussian in itself means Polish-inspired as the King of Poland created the Duchy of Prussia.

I don't know anything about animation, so feel free to ignore me, but is animating a leaderhead necessary at this point? Everyone is relatively new to the Civ 4 graphical engine so no matter what is done it'll certainly only be a temporary fix. Might as well just go with a still image.

This is the same flag only that in the size 128x128 (So as other flags in Civilization IV). Perhaps somebody will include this to future mod (it is necessary to know as, I unfortunately cannot this yet).

Yes, it's beautiful:) . However in my opinion modern (present) flags don't look the best in Civilization. And of course (for not Poles) - this is not the flag of Poland, only the emblem of Poland (Coat of Arms of Poland).

Here is something similar to the first flag posted in this forum:

Although I think the second suggestion is a beautiful flag, it is too current. Also, the purpose of wearing the feathers was too... scare aware enemy horses...? I don't know the exact reason why it was the way it was...

However, I do believe that this should be included in this Mod. Maybe as an upgrade which adds a bonus of some sort?

I do not even have Civ4 yet, I plan to shortly...and all this talk about a Polish Mod is inching me closer and closer to buying the game

Rulkiewicz, the wings allegedly made a noise that scared horses (except of course the horses of hussaria, since they were accustomed to it - which gave them an advantage). I reflect this in game by having the Polish UU get a special bonus against mounted units. :)

As for the unit, I understand that for now we can only change skins on models, instead of adding elements such as wings, unfortunately.

The most viable unit for this is, imo, the knight, which looks like this:

"They also carried a saber or rapier with a six - foot blade (another weapon which was unique to the Poles!), as well as a pair of pistols, a short carbine, a bow and arrows and a variety of other weapons, the most lethal of which was the "czekan", a long steel hammer which could go through heads and helmets like butter!"

How will Polish miliraty technoliges be incorperated? If at all?

Also, Martinus, are you creating a Civ to add to the *main* game... or a new scenario as well?

Only mounted units? The web page I posted above describes the Hussaria's are being able to charge and regroup multiple times, and in an orderly fashion.

Maybe they should get a bonus against solides on feet as well?

Maybe that web page was just over glorifying them, but it also made reference that they hardly lost battles, and suffered limited casualities... maybe they should have a higher skill and higher upkeep to reflect on this...?

Well, I don't want to make them overpowered. Another UU using knight as a basis is the Spanish conquistador and all they get is a bonus against infantry - so I was going to give them a bonus against mounted units instead. You need to remember that these units already come with a good strength, compared to most contemporary infantry (except for pikemen) so it's not like this makes them defenseless. :)

As for your second question, I am just planning to add them as a playable civ, and not make a scenario - but of course the mod will be free to employ by anyone who wishes to make a scenario based on it. :)

Pardon my ignorance, but I do not have the game yet...

When you are completed with this project, will it be possible to "include" the Polish Civ in to the main game? If I'm thinking correctly, I should be able to void selecting the pre-made civ's and pick the Polish one, to play against whom ever, right?
