Polish Civ - Discussion

Yeah, essentially it will add Polish civ as the 19th selectable civ, in addition to the out-of-box ones - you will be able to choose both to play as them or play against them. :)

No, made it Krakow. ;)

Warsaw will be the second city, though.

As for the UU, I spoke with a friend who is more knowledgable in the military history, and it appears hussaria was particularly succesful against musketmen, so I am giving them a bonus against gunpowder units instead of a one against mounted units.

On the text side of things, I need Civilopedia write-ups for Poland, Sobieski, Kazimierz and Husaria;

What exactly is a "Civilopedia write-up"

Does this documentation need to be in a special format? How long would you like them to be? Sentences.. paragrahs... pages?

Okay, I would love to work on this. However, I will be out of town from tonight to Sunday. (Hunting) I will study during the evening and try my best to fulfill this request. Even if you do not accept it, I think it will still be a great method for me to learn about my ancestors past!

Patriotism is always good, especially for one whose country had been removed from the map in the way that Poland has. :king: (Long live the Wettins, by the way.)

It should be interesting to see how Martinus decides to handle cities. Will Lithuanian or Ukranian/Ruthenian ones be added? How about cities in modern Poland which were German for most of history?

Gdansk or Danzig? Boxers or Briefs?

Hey everybody. I'm surprised noone brought up the topic of the Polish civ yet (except somethingawful.com that is ;)). I guess that's because not many people have the game in Poland yet, since it is scheduled for late November.

Now, before we begin, I need to say that I have no idea about graphics editing, so that's the first plea to someone to do it. Having said that, here is my suggestion for the Polish civ:

Civilization Name: Polish Empire
Short Name: Poland
Adjective: Polish
Starting Techs: Agriculture, Mysticism

Leaders:
Imo, one should represent the "golden age" Poland of great people like Copernicus etc., the other should represent the Poland as "bullwark of Christianity", of the Poland-Lithuania era. I suggest:

Kazimierz Wielki (Casimir the Great) - Philosophical, Organized, favours Hereditary Monarchy
Jan III Sobieski (John III Sobieski) - Spiritual, Expansive, favours Representation

So those are the two leaders for your CIV?

Gdansk. Boxer-briefs. :p

Seriously, the jury is still out on the language convention. The vanilla civ seems to be following the line of English names (so there is Rome, not Roma; and Peter not Pyotr) and in most cases the English names of those Polish cities are the same as German names. I will probably release two versions in the end, one with English/German names (Casimir, John, Warsaw, Thorn, Danzig) and one with Polish names (Kazimierz, Jan, Warszawa, Torun, Gdansk).

Yeah. I noticed the Anglo perspective, but in the case of my civ I decided to ignore it. (Irish cities in English names is somewhat of a political thing...)

I think it's up to the author to decide how he's going to handle it. I think the Carthage mod went with the "real" citynames.

Mixing Anglo and foreign citynames has been ok in some circumstances. I recall a game called Europa Universalis where they had "Köln" and "Nippon", but yet "Rome" instead of Roma and "Athens" instead of Athína :)

Hi!
I want to create a Polish civ, so, may I use the stuff resulting from this thread, I mean, city list, leader choices and all other necessary stuff? I can create 3d static LHs for the two chosen leaders and future animated ones :D

thanks.

edited: I didn't see the entire thread  , but in case there is files ready, XLM or other as flags, I'd like to use them too.

I will send you the xlm stuff. The pictures on first page are what the leaders should look like - if you need anything more specific, let me know, and I will dig up more pictures. :)

Today i found this topic and decide to help you
I created Polish Flag based on this one which was used when Kazimierz Wielki (The Great) was Polish King

I think there was 3 great rulers in Poland:
- Kazimierz Wielki
- Jan III Sobieski
- Józef Piłsudski
I think you can add all of them to game ;)

Cities:
- Kraków (Cracow)
- Warszawa
- Poznań
- Toruń
- Lublin
- Olsztyn
- Gdańsk
- Łódź
- Kielce
- Rzeszów
- Bydgoszcz
- Wrocław
- Katowice
- Szczecin

Hmm. Perhaps as the flag would be the better the eagle a little greater and on the red background. White-red colours are national colours for Poland from 1831 year.

Hi all,

this thread was pointed out to me by newMDKiller (thanks!). Incidentally, on civ.org.pl, we have just started our own discussion about a Polish mod. So far the main concept to follow our corresponding Civ3 mod as much as possible, for two reasons:
1. the crucial decissions (main leader, UU, capital) were made by means of a series of anonymous surveys, and so represent the general consensus,
2. we would be able to reuse most assets (such as Civilopedia entries) and concentrate on issues such as balance.

Having said that, how about a cooperation?

PS. The corresponding thread (in Polish) at civ.org.pl may be found here.

For those of us from elsewhere, perhaps the inclusion of a Creative/Organized Ignacy Jan Paderewski would be nice. I know that period of time wasn't one that the modder(s) wanted to highlight, but it would be a good homage to one of the more recognizeable Polish people of the last century.

Hey LoD, thanks for the info. I think Creative/Spiritual for Kazimierz is good too (although, it does not represent his personality too well, considering, he was one of the most irreverent and freethinking Polish Kings, but I suppose the trait should also reflect the attitude of the nation, not just the leader himself ;)).
