When did the Japs ever do that?!! Moderator Action: Please note that 'jap/japs/ is an offensive demeaning term to the Japanese. Please take the effort to types the whole word out
Please read the forum rules: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=422889

How come we have to call the Japanese by their full proper name, but you allow this BRIT to call us Yanks instead of Americans? And how come it is not offensive to shorten "Britons" to "Brits", but it is to shorten "Japanese" to "Japs"? How come it's not offensive to shorten "Australians" to "Aussies"? How are the Japenese so special? I just think they know it pisses people off to have to be so damned PC about it, like calling blacks, "African Americans", etc. NO PC FOR ME!

Then accept the inevitable banning if you wish to be offensive. CFC does not tolerate nation bashing. Any really cool guy can see that 'Jap' was being used perjoratively.

I'm Australian- I don't consider Aussie to be offensive (I honestly don't know any Aussies who do)- I'm less sure of "Brit" and "yank"- I don't use them- but if someone finds them offensive then say so. Japanese people do (in my experience) find "jap" offensive.

"Jap" is a derogatory term. I don't know why it became one, and not Brit, Aussie, etc, but it is. Please don't make any rants like you have in the first post of this thread, that rant could be considered racist.

it all depends on how the slang term came to be--an insult, shortening of a longer name, nick name,ect...

Fr the Forum Rules, and reposted in the OT Notice Board : -

And this one, which I particularly like : -

Your rights to Freedom of Speech don't apply here.
You are welcome to have opinions. You are welcome to question certain subject matter posted on these forums. You are welcome to dislike a certain post or disagree with it. Though we typically condone people to express their opinions and ideas, we have the right to delete yours if necessary, should we consider it abusive.
Will leave to Lefty to deal with you...

Use the 'Report to Mod' function then, to lead mod attention to it. ;)

As one of those 'yellow guys' I will personally find that very offensive...

As pawpaw said, it all depends on how the word was first used. The term "japs" was first used as a racist, demeaning term toward the Japanese. Most Japanese find it offensive.

Who knows? Maybe in a decade or two no one will care and see it as an abbreviation and nothing else. But until then, I must ask everyone here to spend a few more seconds to type the full word.

Closing this thread...

As noted above the one term has a history of being used and taken offensively, the others do not, as could easily have been coomunicated by private message.

Moderator Action: John-LP was previously warned and instructed in the rules of moderator feedback by a moderator for posting this same matter in the subject thread. Nows he is restricted 5 days for comtemptuously ignoring said rule
Please read the forum rules: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=422889

Edit, re-reading said warning issued earliar, it appears that it was misleading with respect to posting such thread in Site Feedback, and no you can not do it here either. restriction to be remove and change to WARNING
