Poll: A new sci-fi mod that I'm interested in working on; community interest?

Would you like the idea of being involved in an extensive sci-fi mod?

Hey guys

I've been seriously considering making a sci-fi mod for civ probably based on similar mechanics to the Final Frontier mod. The idea will be taken (funnily enough) from an old sci-fi D&D campaign I used to run about 8 years ago. I plan to include features such as an extensive tech tree, lots of unique civs, traits and resources as well as balanced but diverse options for technology specialisation.

I intend to invest a lot of time into this mod, but this all depends on how much demand there is in the community. I've posted this poll here as there are so many modders that frequent the FfH forum!

Basically I want to know who would be interested in this kind of a mod and, who would be interested in getting inlvolved in development :)

Let the voting begin lol :D

If you don't mind someone who disappear for weeks/months, doesn't always do what he said he'd do, only does what he consider fun (pretty much just SDK stuff not involving graphics in any way) and has his own (small) project that still hasn't been updated after months of working on it (more or less - mostly less), sure, I'm in :p

Lol thanks for the feedback so far. I'm presently typing up concepts for civs and working on a basic tech tree. Also I've got civics at the back of my mind as well. I need to figure out where I can post my ideas... (like a sub-forum or something). Any suggestions on this would be welcome :)

I don't know anything about how to make a mod, but I'd certainly be looking to try this out if it gets real.

Do you intend to use some kind of source control? [like SVN on google code]

No idea :p

This is my first attempt at a project, so it will start up slowly. Not sure what you mean by source control.

I can already program, and taught myself python so that I can get the ball rolling. I just need to become more familiar with python in a civ environment!

Looks like you've got a lot of work ahead of you mate...

Why post here and spam Kael's forum? There are loads of general forums...

Why not? I don't post anywhere else anyways. I know people here.

If this is a bad place for this poll then could it be moved by a moderator?

CIV4 - Creation & Customization is probably the place to start a thread for getting designs going (like the Mad Max Mod currently is), then you can move into the ModPacks once you get something solid up.

Keep it going long enough and get enough outside interest and you'll wind up with your own forum eventually.

But you are right, this is the highest volume area of the CFC site, especially for modders of code I imagine. But you'll get a lot of good ideas for a Tech Mod out in the Creation & Customization forum which you won't find here (Like Grey Fox's Fuel Modcomp)

Maybe try a modmod to test out ideas and coding practice before going for a full mod?

Yeah that's a good idea. I was thinking of making a modmod for final frontier first in order to see how it goes, then move on to working up from scratch.

@Xienwolf. Thanks for the info! I will post a thread in the civ4 creation and customisation forum tomorrow when I have a bit more information to submit :)

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the feedback! :)

I think someone should do a Warhammer 40k mod. That'd be freaking awesome... all the civs, units, concept art and backstory are already there, just requires coding and adapting the images to the right format.

Hehe I second that. Dark eldar all the way :p

No way, dude... Craftworld Eldar ftw! They're hardcore and emo. Can't go wrong.

Dark Eldar have the emo past but just aren't as badass. Craftworlds are the shiznit.

 I guess... I still like Dark Eldar... that said I haven't played Warhammer in over 10 years :p

Nor have I. I bought the 2nd edition Eldar Codex, got familiar with it and started to build an army... and then 3rd came out and completely nerfed the Eldar before I got much of a chance to play as them. So I've got 3e rulebooks... the art/fluff is cool, but I haven't really actually played much at all.

Seriously... Warp Spiders go from instant killing everything in a flamethrower template to a short ranged, single shot that isn't particular accurate or powerful? I mean, fine, they were overpowered, I get that... but to go from overpowered to "completely useless"? Right after I bought a dozen of them? Ouch.

So... I love the flavour. And the whole "in the future, there is only war" bit works great with something like Civ. Very dark, gritty, violent. Would totally play that mod, and would definitely help make it (although I also haven't programmed anything since... 2003?).

Id like the idea of sci-fi/futuristic mod in the vein of Alpha Centuri.

Maybe with multiple planets and playable human races only. Something gritty and strategical with ICBM's, artillery and dropships :D
