What is the overall best unique unit?

EDIT: In relation to era of course!! Don't say, "Panzer!!! it's 16.8.3!!!!"

Hmm... Hard to choose, but... I'll have to... go... with... the...

Erm...

Can't decide...

Mounted Warrior.

EDIT: You don't have the Rider or the War Elephant there!!! Why???

I'll go with the Cossack once again. I mostly play as Russia for the reasons of me being Russian (which makes Russia an easier Civ to play in relation to city names and reference... small bit, but counts for me, I don't like renaming cities) and the Cossacks.
In both PTW and C3C, I like the timing of the GA, which for me would almost allways be after the railroads are in place. I like to get as much as I can out of my GA, and too many UUs give you GA in despotism.
In PTW, Cossacks have one extra defence that helped a lot against MDIs, knights and longbowmen counterattacks.
In C3C, Cossacks have blitz ability, which combined with artillery use, give plenty of elite Cossacks and MGLs. And an army of any cavalry is a pretty cool thing to have in the game where mobility decides so much...
So based on all of those factors, my best UU would be the Cossack.

Disclaimer: while Russia remains my civ of choice, I do realize that it is probably not the best civ to play on archipelago map or levels higher than monarch or emperor. I am now trying out Mayas in two different games because of the nice trait combination which can work much better on a random map.

Cause no one would've pick them  kidding. I should've at least included the option for other, so if any things "other" please post why.

Also I voted for Immortals because they can be hard to kill in the mid ancient age at 4.2.1, and of course, 4 offence can kill anything and relatively cheap 30 shield.

Oh. Mounted Warriors because they are fast (required) and they have the same attack as the swordsman, against speamen, in an age where city defenses won't be that high, and artillery isn't as important. You can also use them out of Despotism and they would still be effective.

I like the Sipahi. It's the best cavalry unit (8/3/3), doesn't become obsolete until tanks are discovered, and can even stand up to the first generation tanks.

I like the Sipahi and Berserk. Altough more expensive than the unit they replace, they absolutely dominate.

For best graphics, I like the Panzer.

I voted for the legionary. The extra defense bonus is little thing at a first glance but... you have an UU that defend like a hoplite and attack like a swordsman. In a stack of legions, every unit is a good attacker that can turn into a tremendous defender when necessary.

i'm missing samurai
i think the best UU is the immortal, but the samurai is a very close second!

My fave is the Dromon. At least when I play archipelago!

Sipahis are certainly the best if you (like me) favour lightning wars. My empire is always kind of floundering until I develop military tradition, at which point my cavalry units allow me to conquer the world. That said, I also like the Arab Ansar warrior, because it's cheapness and speed allow me to play my style of war earlier in the game.
Byzantine Dromons are also awesome! You can build a massive fleet of them and rule the seas!

i like the gailic swordsman. it has an extra move point and it attacks like a swordsman. this allows me to attack and if i lose i can still retreat.

EDIT: oh yeah, the hoplite is a close second. ;)

In this poll I vote for the Gallic Swordsman, but the Mounted Warrior is a close runner-up.
But my favourite UU is the Rider. It is one of two 3-movement pre-cavalry units, and it arrives on a very good time for triggering off a GA. Additionally the traits of China is very suitable for warmongering(quick infrastructure, high production, quick promotion), which is why I prefer it to the Ansar Warrior(Yes, I am addicted to speed! :crazyeye: ).
I also agree with Morchuflex, on archipelagos the Dromon is tremendous.

Dromons, Riders, Musketeers, Enkidus, Swiss Merc. Out of all units in the poll I only like Immortals (saves 10 sp), and Legionaries (a Pike with +2 attack).

I hate Ancient UUs. The Enkidu is the exception, since it mainly helps against Barbs, and prevents the AI from attacking. Immortals and Legionaries (you can build them until you have a GA) are units I use in early medieval, with Trebs as back-up. Dromons are simply great for about 2 eras.
Since I rarely fight backwards CIvs with Cavs, the Cossack isn't very useful for me, and I don't like the GA timing (late MA is fine, but to use Cossacks/Sipahi most efficiently, you need to beeline to MilTrad).
Sipahi is too expensive - at that time, I usually lack raw numbers of units, not quality (hardly ever attack something not red-lined).

It was a hard choice but I think the Roman Legionary is best unit because it gives you some extra strength when you need it most. But I don't know all of these units because I've a very old version of CIV III

Of these, I voted for the Persian Immortal, because they allow great early offensive tactics. This compounds with the fact that the Persian will usually have an early tech lead, and can hold off all comers before they get their hands on Medieval Infantry.

However, my favourite of all is the Samurai. That extra defence is a massive boon, performing far better than the pikeman. This allows you to take cities and hold them against counter-attack without having to move other support forces in their wake.
