I'm curious to see if the overhaul of diplo related to defensive pacts etc has helped. Thoughts?
Just getting around to the medieval era. I've been seeing LOTS of friendships, so I'm looking forward to see how they all interact with each other. Playing peacefully right now and with the 43 civ DLL, so I'll have plenty to observe.
 
As I currently play on Deity (though not the overclocked deity you play on.) I obviously change my starting builds/techs to suit the civ/plan/situation.

With that said my two most common opening tech choices are:

1- iron -> bronze working for early tribute and dominance.

2- Pottery -> Trapping -> Markets for a defensive expansive game.

My build order is generally shrine first, monument second and then either units or other buildings if I'm feeling greedy. This changes a lot too, for example as Aztecs I'll just build a bunch of jaguars and kill barbs+go to war with the first person I meet for a fast religion.

This is the first time i ask for build orders . In my opinion, shrine and monument start without any military in deity is going to invite Ai to visit u before turn 60 in epic or 100 for marathon, cant be greedy in deity ! You might wanna add 1 warrior and a fast archer to the build before attempting a monument or shrine., if you are not playing aztecs. The 2 Warriors can be upgraded early to spears so they are bang for bucks.

Back to the OP topic, due to the one attack range of cities, Ais are very vulnerable to the human player. Archer can hit the cities and not get hit! before mathematics. In my VP games, runaways are less commons , however because the AI are more intelligent. you see a few superpowers which makes the mid game interesting. :thumbsup:

As compared to CP core, friendships between the AI and you are more common now after classical.
 
Lots of effective DPs going around. Can't really tell just how much it helps with smaller civs because this 43 civ game with YnAEMP is a huge mess. One thing's for sure, Ethiopia is a bigger pain than ever. Keeps breaking up the DPs of his allies and repeatedly disrupts my trade deals by endlessly bribing civs to attack me. Backstabs are common now because friendships are hard to avoid. Really fun to see the Inca brought down low by a strong alliance that keeps the power balanced.
I think most of the action has been in Europe, with capitals going left and right. I'll see how all of this affects Ideologies if I don't win too quickly(Indonesia is OP on this map). Otherwise I'll go through a faster game with a more aggressive civ next time.

Overall, this made for a much more interesting game, albeit a bit messy. I will shift all of the blame towards Ethiopian meddling.

Was coming around to post after playing 1-12. Pacts are a lot more common now. Before, I saw only one or two, but in my 15 civ game, Greece had 5 (!) defensive pacts when I declared war on him. Luckily said Civs were across the map and divided by a large sea so I had nothing to worry about, but there has been a few times where I had to think if this was a good idea. Before I'd declare war with no question if the Civ was getting on my nerves.
 
AI may err on making too many DPs/DoFs, we'll see. 1-2 backstabs in total for the whole game is about what I'm shooting for in terms of treachery/randomness from the AI.

I have an almost-complete one-game sample: Immortal, Communitas continents, standard. An odd game, playing Progress/Statecraft/Rationalism with Indonesia. My military went from 5th to 3d, and I eventually became a contender for high score despite being ranked low in pop, and always clearly behind the science leader.

So what happened diplomatically with that hand?
  • Greece befriended me early (I shared a continent with Greece and China.)
  • China capitulated smartly, when she was broken but still had plenty left.
  • I steadily made friends until at one point I had 6.
  • DPs were a factor, but about the same as usual in my games. No one asked me to join one, despite a strong military.
  • Wars were frequent, and there was a 4-5 civ battle for top score that stayed close throughout the game.
  • And then, late in the game, when I had top score but was about 7 techs behind the leader, the leader (Shoshone) DoW'd me, saying someone had to stop me. Later that same turn, Greece DoW'd me as well, for the same reason!
Again, a one-game sample, but I think it's exactly what you wanted... And a lot of fun!

Niiiiicee. I worry the 'we must stop him/her from winning' DOW rationale is a little ham-fisted, but, well, sometimes you just need a little pork.

The pork seems justified so far. If the entire board turned on me... then we'd be talking about fists of ham.

Oh also, keep in mind that the AI evaluates DPs for humans on their level, and then again when you offer it to them, so there's a chance you missed some DPs.
