What about some other words.

Prominence. Renown. Esteem. Acclaim. Repute. Distinction.

Argh. Those are actually really good suggestions! I made the initial post in something odf a hurry and couldn't think of anything better on the fly!

Or have them both be "Culture," since they're really two sides of the same coin already:
Cultural Influence: 98
Cultural Heritage: 187

Actual tourism can be a part of cultural influence, but as was pointed out above, rock music, Pepsi and blue jeans can influence East Germany quite a lot even if East Germans aren't staying in swank London hotels.

But I've noticed the game plays just fine with the names as is.

The Influence / Heritage split may be the best way to think about culture / tourism. The game explicitly analogizes tourism to "offensive" culture. I expect some ambitious modder will take this idea and run with it soon. Hopefully re-skinning / re-naming / re-vamping the "tourism" specific buildings. E.g. Hotels.

None of the ones present in this pool: "Awe" or "admiration" would be far more indicative:

- You would win the cultural victory whenever all the citizens of the world feels more admiration for your civilization's culture than their own, which seems a far more logical thing than becoming the Nº1 touristic spot of the planet

- Awe is something that other people projects over you, unlike culture which is a quality that one can have on their own regardless of whatever other people thinks about it. This dichotomy fits well with the whole "defensive VS offensive yield" mechanic

- Awe is a more broad term caused by a plethora of different things such as great works of art, political ideologies, great people, touristic atractions or pop culture references, pretty much as it happens like in the real world.

- Awe is a term which does not overlap with other in game terms such as "influence"

So my vote goes for making this a game of "The awe that you can inspire in others" VS "Their apreciation for their own cultural heritage".

Why did you leave Tourism off the poll?

I vote Tourism

I like the tourism mechanic, but I don't really like what it's called. Tourism is when people travel to a place for vacation (holiday), to take time of for leisure, to see exciting things you can't see at home etc. Tourism is not something that's "exported" and spread around the world to gain influence.

Tourism gets bonuses with trade routes, open borders and such, right? So, tourism isn't your people traveling, but other people traveling to you. They see your shiny things, go back home and wonder "why don't we have shiny things? Why can't we have shiny things!?". Thus they have been influenced, and thus will they become more unhappy (unrest).

I think Tourism is the perfect label for this mechanic. We can be oddly elitist (come on, video gamers. Stop it.) and insist that complex verbiage be used to describe a simple mechanic, or accept that "Tourism," with its flaws, is a reasonable compromise for a MASS APPEAL game. Civ V isn't exactly niche.

"Tourism" was a lousy word to pick.

It is, of course, just a bit of semantics, but an annoyance nonetheless. "Influence" is already in use for city-state relationships. But there are tons of other words better-suited than "tourism". It was a bizarre choice given all of the available options as it doesn't capture the concept of exporting culture to other civilizations.

For instance, the USSR didn't fall simply because of people going on holiday. in democratic nations. it had more to do with syndicated television and pirated rock-and-roll casettes.

Other words to embody the broad concept:

Propoganda
Media
Immigration
Eminence
Prestige
Sway
Exposure
Impact
Dominance
Mindshare
Zeitgeist

Which is it, a "perfect label" or a "reasonable compromise"? :)

Because it it doesn't incorporate every element of culture war, it's not perfect. And if there were better words available, then no compromise is necessary.

I also don't get your protest against elitism. Isn't suggesting that we need a compromise because the general don't have the vocabulary to handle a word like "hegemony" kind of elitist?

I like Tourism. It's a relatively crude catch-all term, BUT it explains itself very easily in terms of how it operates. Get shiny stuff = get more tourism.

I do not like the term tourism either. Tourism isn't really what drives political change its more of an economic stream.

Influence seems like a better term but I still think we are missing something.

I'm looking for a word that says, "My civilizations cultural accomplishments are how this era will be remembered".

Posterity. That's it!

EDIT: I should have looked up Hegemony before writing. ... It's the word I was looking for in my quote above. =)

Influence. I'm managing a bloody empire, not a damned resort chain.

Taken in context, saying it's the "perfect label" and a "reasonable compromise" isn't a contradiction. It's the perfect choice considering the options, but it's not perfect objectively, so it's a reasonable compromise.

I made one comment about "elitism," hardly a protest. I was simply pointing out that this is a video game with mass appeal. Firxis needn't confuse people if it's not really necessary. That's not being an elitist, that's recognizing that not everyone is interested in the same subjects/things as I.

Cultural Imperialism!

In earnest, I would like to see it Civ-dependent. I would love to see the "Aztecization" of Persia... or "Polonization" of Morroco...

The accepted academic/political term is 'soft power' originated by Joseph Nye to describe attractiveness of a country's brand.

Check the wiki article; there's even a ranking of nations

Impact is not a bad suggestion, from the list above, Influence is probably best, but has an unfortunate co-meaning with what you have on City States. I don't think Tourism is that bad a choice on the bottom line, sure it does sound a bit awkward, but it sort of makes good sense with the art/hotel/travelling sort of stuff.

Influence. I'm managing a bloody empire, not a damned resort chain.

RIGHT? If my empire is some sort of propaganda-fueled totalitarian nightmare state, I really can't picture the world's citizens strapping on their finest Bermuda Shorts to coem over for a visit.

"Honey! The leather in this jackboot has a distinctly Stalinist flavor! You can really taste the oppression! What? You can't taste it because your mouth has been beaten to a pulp for insolence? Well fine. I think it's delicious! So glad we made the trip!" - Clark Griswold, National Lampoon's Autocratic Vacation

We already have a term called Influence, influence with city states. Having it mean two things is "eh". I don't really care it's named Tourism, you get more of it by having hotels, I believe it's called tourism because it actually IS tourism. People visit your land because of your great works of arts and stuff.

Of those alternative names to tourism, including "soft power", I find them all a bit too formal and generic. Tourism in Civ V is about attractiveness, so I'd suggest lend a word from a foreign language or simply make one up. Would "venusity" work, for example?

EDIT: Okay, Strategist83 beatme to it. "Swag" describes this mechanic perfectly.
