Which civ-type game do you think has so far had the best unit and battle system?
Options include:

Civ1

Civ2

Civilization: Call to Power

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

Call to Power 2

Civ3

Galactic Civilizations

Civ4

Galactic Civilizations 2

Civ5

Other? Please specify

Not exactly civ style.....but Age of Wonders series was quite....elegant.

Call to Power 2

With the map scale in hexo of Civ V would be perfect. No stack, no stupid 1UPT that applies on a game scale like Panzer General (where mountains and forests are not an hex in the middle of nowhere, and you don't have the Tetris Syndrome of Civ V)

Galciv is a game to far away from Civilization, with a fine customization of the ships, maybe useful in future tech...

Master of Orion II

Massive fleet battles were very fun.

Rat

Master of Magic, no other battles were ever as much FUN because of the massive variety :(

Ugh. Misvoted again. CTP when I meant CTP2. Yeah, the AI was rubbish, but the 12-unit limit on the stacking together with the tactical screen makes it for me. Honourable mention to SMAC for the fantastic unit workshop, though for me the main strategy there was out-teching the other guys (Drop pods plus Space Elevator, lovely combination in the end game).

I loved Call to Power 2. You had your melee units up front, your archers behind, and Knights on the flank. So your melee too the brunt of the damage while the archers and knights were defended but can give damage as well without getting hit.

Plus a maxium of 12 in a stack, was good as well. Something like 1upt but not quite.

Sadly, just like CiV, the AI couldn't use it well.

I vote other. AoW/MoM/HoMM combat is better. I actually created a thread over at the FFH forum recently about the possibility of exploiting the info panel screens to emulate that combat model, using top down or 2D isometric view, but there doesn't seem to be much interest in it.

I'd love to work on such a model and the AI for it, but not if no one cares for it.

I haven't enough experience with several of the games to be able to properly vote, particularly Call to Power. However, I find the results/comments interesting. Nearly half the people who voted voted for Civ5, whereas no one who has bothered to comment has voted Civ5.

I like how everyone said Civ5.

The AI cant handle the 1upt system at all so how is it clearly the best when a semi-knowledgable player can win a military victory every time on all but the highest difficulty levels and the AI is powerless to stop you?

Steamrolling the AI easily= best combat system? Suuuure.

I like the unit/combat-system in Civ V best. 1UPT, and with a difference between Melee and Range Units, plus the fact that you really can't afford to lose a single unit.

It's too bad that the AI isn't good at it, but if you play with a gentleman's rule in MP (one moves first, then the other - making it turn-based during war), then you'll truly enjoy the tactical side of this.:)

I loved Age of Wonders and Age of Wonders II. :)

I see you can by the two games plus the x-pack for pretty cheap now.

CTP2 still a decade later holds the crown. Embarrassing actually.

I dont find a problem with 1upt in civ V but i do have a problem with too simplified unit statistics. I dont understand why while using charriot and attacking spearman they get +100% agains horseman defense. Im using bows not lances ...

He asked about the combat system, not about the AI.

Civ 4 AI was terrible too; and especially because war was so powerful, I could go from being the lowest score with a poor economy to top dog in a couple of wars, all easily winnable with simple siege massing despite being at a lower tech.

Not voting yet because I'm quite tempted to buy CtP 2 from gog. Based on what I've read this far I have high hopes for the combat system in CtP 2.

I misvoted too. I agree with you on SMAC as well.

I liked the tile improvement system too. No worker micromanagement.

Beyond those two things the game wasn't that good though.
