What resources would u guys want to have most in ur empire?

All of them are important, true. But I'd especially hate to play without iron, because this would heavily disturb my routine early game continent conquest schemes.

I would hate to not have horses or saltpeter, since most of my games do end with either lots of knights, or lots of cavlary.

I voted iron. It appears early in the game before I have had a chance to conquer much territory. By the time the other resources appear I usually control enough land that I will have at least one supply of them. When ever a new resource becomes available I quickly check the map and see if I have it, if I dont then I go to war at once to aquire it before the country that does have it can take advantage of it.

I've found that that not only iron is important, but when it comes time to build railroads you're sunk without coal...more times than I care to mention have I come up short on coal and have had to bargain heavily with another civ to get it. Nothing beats the no movement points of a railroad to get your units to someplace quickly.

I've had some big problems with coal also, but Iron is one of the one's I hate to be without the most. Iron is badly needed for any Ancient/Middle age wars. The wars that gain valueable land and terrority. Most of the time I gain the land I need before I get calavary... Then I sit back and hit spacebar.

coal, definately. not having railroads can be a right pain in the ass later on when you're gearing up for a big war

Heh when the site starts going slow, the multiple posts go through the roof. ;)

Anyways, I think oil is the most important for me. I always play on huge maps with like 7 or so civs, so its rare that I meet someone early on. Even if I do, I usually dont go to war in the early eras. I usually wait til I have tanks and bombers before I beat the crap out of people, so oil is definitely the most important for me.

btw, you need coal AND iron to build railroads.;)

true you need both, but it seems as if iron is a lot more plentiful than iron is...compare how often you have to trade for iron and how often you have to trade for coal! :) you can get some great trades if you have all the coal! :)

let me correct part of that post: "but it seems as if iron is a lot more plentiful than coal is"

The interesting thing about Coal is that you only need it for a limited time -- long enough to build railroads. If I'm missing Coal in a game, I'll usually get it from another civ. A 20-turn deal is more than enough to establish your "transportational" infrastructure (instant move to anywhere in your empire).

I usually play the huge map and I've never been able to create railroads on all city sqares and also make connections to every city in 20 turns.

Early game I will say Iron, it's critical if you go to war. Late game, rubber/oil. If Ai has no rubber in late game, he is easier to beat. So rubber is not so important fore me, but it is VERY important if Ai has it, that’s my first target to my bombers.
