How much should I concern myself with pollution? I realize state prop is generally better than environmentalism, but I "need" the 6 health points. Or dont I? What are the negatives, if any (besides the ugly green face), of short or long term pollution?

Not much. You lose 1 food per turn for each green face over your health. In effect, it lowers the amount of food you produce per turn. That's it.

Plus, if you have any angry / sick face overflow in a city, you won't have the "We love the <Ruler type> day" in the city, which reduces the maintenance cost.

If you have just a couple of net unhealthy (upper right of the city screen) you just lose a couple of food. Usually you can deal with unhealthiness through buildings and trading heavily for the food resources. A lot of newer players don't trade enough. This is why wonders like Rock & Roll are so good, you can trade the hit songs for health or happiness resources. They give you Corn (+2 health in each city connected to the capital) and you give them 1 hit songs. Depending on the map size, you can get from 2-7 hit songs. On huge maps you get 7, so you get 1 happiness and can trade six of them away for other resources.

How huge are these cities? If you're using State Property, you aren't getting extra food from corporations.

I was wondering, thanks. Random events (as well as huts, barbs, and now espionage {that may go back on}) are off.

I dont trade for reources. I did, but the price goes up after the deal expires. Then I go back into pollution. I'd rather rely on myself. Should I pay more?

The cities arent too huge. I hit health trouble after i get my cities to about 14 or so, and have to tech for medicine, regardless of what else is going on. I guess I could whip more early game, but no matter how much more efficient it may be, i just like having big numbers! I play on prince (marathon, huge, Cathy of Sumeria, Khmer, or Mali) and do not really wanna move up! Until it gets too easy, which it hasn't. I dont wanna get to the point where I can get any wonders!!!

Ok I'm getting off topic but I wanted to give insight into my play style. Peacemonger, REX (to the stone). Get big early, build, and hopefully noone DOW. But Imp w/ GW means GG, so I"m usually fine....

Oh yea corps. They put me in the hole! Maybe if I use FA... I read a thread about using Sushi and running merchants... What if I dont want merchants? And what if I DO want to keep the food o the workshop squares?

Hmm well Cathy isn't the name that jumps to mind for wonder whoring (some other kind whoring though). Try Bismarck, he's ind and exp, so +2 health right there.

Also, make sure you settle your cities next to fresh water and/or ocean if possible.

By FA you mean FM? The best way to build a large, happy and healthy empire is, conquer/vassal everyone else so you have all the resources. Forget what those hippies in college tell you, war is always the answer.

Most people should whip more, but a size 14 city when Medicine comes along isn't that big. I don't understand the price going up. Normally the AI will trade luxuries and health resources 1 for 1. The sales price for those resources is usually 6 GPT. This is for most - Ivory costs more. Basically the pricier resources are strategic, where the price fluctuates. Stone and Marble become cheaper as the game goes on (and they are less useful). On water maps, Astronomy can open up a lot of trades.

If you want more wonders, take an Industrious leader. You might like Bismark as nfw said for a game or two but don't get addicted to him.

Early strategy depends on neighbors and room. It depends on situation. If you have nobody close and a lot of room I'd expand peacefully. I once had Shaka introduce himself at Turn 2 - that meant rush was mandatory. Also, make sure you have one city devoted to producing units. No wonders (except military nat'l wonders) and no Library, etc. Just units and enough buildings to produce units more efficiently.

Corps. vs. workshops. The old argument - Free Market with Corps or State Property for workshops and watermills. The threads discussing this get up to 10 pages. I like State Property because it's simpler and I often pursue heavy expansion with Cannons. However, Organized leaders or HRE (Rathaus) often do better with corps.
