I have seen more pop-up ads in my current browsing session they I normally do in a week!

What is going on? I even got the annoying pop-up when closing the pop-up window garbage.

Please don't turn this site useless!

Or Mozilla Firebird if you don't want to pay or put up with built in adverts.

Fortunately, I haven't noticed any...

This was a very valuable comment  that downplays the actual magnitude of the problem by substituting more spam.

The pop-ups are currently out of control for some reason and the code for the take-over add seems to be self-actuating, so when the forums are slow due to mismanagement of conflictys on the Forums server, then the Take-Over ad may initiate slowly and cause browsing lag before it suppresses at a later moment when the internal cookie suppression kicks on. Even with a fixed IP address you could get multiple take-overs in any day.

Hmmm, I haven't seen the takeover ad as much as I uassly do today athrough I have had no less then 30 pop ups so far today. I like the take over ad more then these pop ups. Oddly there appear to be only a few ads that are here but that are reappearing constantly as you go to another page on the site. I have noticed also that they don't come as often if you leave the ads open, however with the match making one that might raise a few Q. ;) gamesville or whatever it's called appears to be one of the ads along with allposters.com. the latter the most annoying as it's link is a screenshot of the site it self along with a red X that makes you think you click that to close it. Did that my self just a little while ago.

Edit: Just found two after posting this, the match maker and a new one of sorts, that classmates site where you find old classmates. Not that I need it, since I'm still in school.:p

No need to be snippy, I'm just making an observation.

Caught the source for one of those popup ads, in case one of the telefragged guys wants to see it:
Code:

Not being snippy, just making an observation also.

Also just had to barf out another spam post to keep pace with you in this random observation game.

Just had 4 pop-ups while accessing this thread and making this post alone.

It is strange on the frequency. I am getting stuck with them on almost every thread open.

I don't know what this job sites policy on pop-up blockers is, so I posted here hoping for a solution. I hope the firewall here isn't what is causing the delay and problems.

Now up to 6 popups and I should add that this sort of intrusive spam code from the server is one of the reasons that MSN and AOL have raised the security alert status classifying websites with "civfanatics" in the domain name as higher than minimal risk.

Some firewall programs key off this risk assessment and begin to intervene more actively to try and prevent security breaches by the inserted java code in the adds and all the children that they spawn.

The first place this security classification downgrade shows up is in large file transfer screening and bandwidth cap management.

Or Netscape. It has a very smart ad management system. Basically you get to chose from whom you want ads (most likely no-one). Very democratic :goodjob:

Some of us aren't allowed the *luxury* of using popup-blockers. At work, right now, I must use IE6, no add-ons. No downloads are allowed, so no popup blockers are to be had.

And yes, the popups have gone out of control this morning!

Obviously I don't know who you work for but has anyone tried asking them to install pop up blocking software so that whilst you are doing "research" you do not accidentally get redirected to other sites?

I work for the US Department of Defense. They allow us to have internet access in order to do our jobs more efficiently. "Surfing" the web is discouraged, to say the least. Our firewall works much like cracker described above: I cannot see anything on the CFC fileserver; I cannot get to Poly at all, as well as to many other sites I would like to visit. The policy is, if you need access to a specific site to do your job, and the firewall blocks it, submit written justification to access the site, and it will be allowed. Obviously, CFC is *NOT* required for my real job, so I just have to live with the popups, and hope that the site doesn't get turned off completely for me!

:hmm:
Hmm, the pop-up attacks seem to be limited to the US only (?).
I mean it's 5:50 PM in central Europe, so there's surely quite a lot of European posters online...
I do not get them this time and I'd be probably first in line to start a rant about illegal pop-ups

Last night also. In OT, if I so much as put my cursor over a thread title it made one appear.

Ok but it may be a valid strategy for other posters... And I'm in Europe as well, so no pop ups apart from the normal ones.

I've temprarily removed the ad banner from the forum's "Modern CFC" style now. Switch to the Modern CFC style if you are using a different style...

I got 5 popups on the forum in the last 5 minutes.

Let's hope Telefragged can fix the problem soon...
