As the title suggests, Portugal are great for gold per turn, I'm currently going for a science victory on a large earth map, and around turn 250 with 9 trade routes I'm making 540+ GPT. The feitoria makes the most of the UA, as you have access to all the resources in the game when all CS's are feitoriaed. And the Nau helps with CS alliances, as you can spam them, dump goods, then gift to a CS. Anyone had any similar experiences with Portugal or find anything wrong with them? I always find that gold-focussed civs are very versatile in the VC you pursue, so I love Portugal.

I like them, too. Even on Immortal I was outclassing the AI's gpt. Then again I did the same with Venice, but they are way too limited IMO.

I haven't gotten a chance to play Portugal yet, but I was wondering if the Feitoria also counts towards resources you already have.

For example, my cites have access to 3 silk.

A nearby CS has access to 1 silk and I plant a feitoria in it.

So does that mean I can trade my 3 silk away and still have 1 silk (the one from the CS) count toward my happiness?

If later, I become an ally of that CS, does that mean I get an extra silk to trade?

Thanks ;)

Yes.

No, even though you now have 2 silk (assuming the 3 of your own were traded away) you can't trade any more than you have yourself.

Feitoria are excellent for hedging against losing an ally and for getting an extra copy of your own resources so you can trade all yours.

The only catch to what the OP said is that in my games the City States generally DON'T have all the resources, and there is a ton of overlap. For instance among 16 city states in my current game there's only Dye, Gems, Sugar and Pearls available to snag via feitoria.

Yes.

I agree, although you will have extra of said resource in bulk to trade if other civs have any luxuries you don't have, which, if successful, will make them like you. I still think luxury trading is slanted towards the ai however, they often ask for up to 5 luxuries for the one they give you.

I still think Feitoria is overhyped. In most of my games 3-4 CSs usually have the same luxury which usually only result in like maybe 2-3 more luxuries at best assuming they're are by the coast.

And often times you have enough gold as Portugal to ally them yourself, so you don't really need to build this at all. I guess the gold can be spend elsewhere instead, but allying CS is always better if you have the Patronage policies. I guess it could help in science victories more if you don't go for Patronage.

Mercantile CS's, baby. ;)

Obviously, but Portugal can found cities, their UU is more interesting and useful in combat, and happiness is never an issue if you use the feitoria extensively

You r talking like you have feitoria from start. You get it too late. I do not see much effort to found new cities in late game...

The problem of Portugal is that you have no bonuses at start at all. And after you get Navigation you still need another 20 turns to build several feitorias... I agree that after getting Nao playing for Portugal becomes funny and easy, but how to have nice cities before?

Well the extra gold from trade routes from the UA helps, especially if you have a rare resource relative to the map, but I find the mid-late game tends to drag in terms of unit control if you aren't going to war (and as Portugal, it's more beneficial to go mid-tall, peaceful and gold-focussed), so the feitoria tends to come just as your workers are running out of friendly tiles to work. Portugal is a very active civ, in that you need to use their unique abilites etc. for the best affect.

when i played Portugal, every single City-state had silver and nothing else. I built feitorias everywhere, but I dont think it mattered. Not a single guy even had whales or anything.

Not that having Whales would have mattered, due to the Feitoria only being able to be built on the coast, and not on ocean tiles.

I thought fetoria was this:

You send a worker to a city state regardless of relationship with it.

You then build it on a tile within the city state (preferably one without luxury resources). I usually just destroy farms or trade posts to do so.

You will then get a copy of every luxury resource that city state has.

I pretty much always dial way back the # of city states in my games, because I think it's ridiculous how many there are. With # of city states = 1/3 to 1/2 of the number of civs, I've found Portugal to be much more balanced.

Portugal is the bomb. If you like money, and don't want to be restricted to only founding one city, they're the natural choice.
