Portugal: Lords of Exploration (v.1)

Raen,

I actually was planning on doing a Nau (Carrack), but Civ V's naval model doesn't really support it because the Nau was slower than the Caravel and its biggest benefit was its defensibility and its cargo space... Since cargo isn't in the base game I decided to switch to the Explorador since it fit with the exploration theme.

Thanks for your comments and I agree... Afonso Henriques would make a great leader. I just choose a leader that matched the mod's theme. ;)

As for the explorador... the next version will have increased movement and will be able to build all the luxury improvements. They are really nice units for expansion during the Renaissance. ;)

Update:

Hello Everyone,

So I've been playing around with the mod for the past week trying to get it polished up. I've added a lot of new artwork and I'm pleased with how the mod looks so far.

Right now the UT, UU, and UB are planned to be:

Lords of Exploration (Unique Trait): Embarked units gain +2 movement and can defend. +1 Great Merchant point per turn and free Great Merchant when you research Astronomy.
Explorador (Unique Unit): This Unit gains +1 movement and can build forts, trading posts, and all the luxury resource improvements, except for the quarry.

Feitoria (Unique Building): The Feitoria is the Portuguese unique building, replacing the Harbor. It allows "water routes" (see rules) between cities, increases the city's defenses and naval unit production, and provides +1 Gold for each luxury resource worked by the city.

These are some major changes, but I made them for the following reasons:

I switched the river movement to extra culture per specialist b/c it was more fitting to the civilization's history.

I considered dropping the embarked units bonuses, but it just didn't feel right for Portugal to not have some maritime advantage in regards to transporting units. The Explorador was changed because it made more sense to allow the unit to explore faster and it doesn't step on the French's toes.

The change in the Feitoria was because I couldn't find and examples of inland
feitorias, while I found numerous examples of feitorias overlooking harbors.

In addition, I didn't like the feel of the mod because a player could effectively ignore the naval techs in favor of economic ones in the previous version.

Note: I switched to Darius for the leaderhead stuff because he looks more like a king than Washington and speaks in a foreign language and so its less distracting and more immersive when you meeting him as an AI player.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, then feel free to make them. I'll be uploading version .2 in the next day or so after another playtest.

Hello All,

I just added a screenshot of version .2 and its nice a shiny icons, which were created by Jeff Culbertson! (a.k.a. TypoTX) ;)

Last call for comments, suggestions, etc.!

I've got all the shiny new icons working and have playtested the civ and think version .2 is ready to go. So if I don't get any more feedback, I'll be uploading it tonight or tomorrow morning.

I uploaded a new version of the Portugal mod with lots more artwork. See the first post for a list of all changes.

I'm glad you like the screenshot! Jeff did a great job with the icons!

I chose Darius since he looks kingly and doesn't speak English... I originally chose Washington, but he'd welcome you in the name of America and that really didn't work for me ;)

That's odd...

Anyone else having this problem?

I'll have to look around the boards and see if anyone has post something similar with other civ-based mods.

When you look in the following folder:

Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/MODS

Do you see the mod listed? If not, then it probably failed to install.

You can also find the mod here... all you have to do is place it in the MODS folder and it should work.

Nive job on the mod jaldaen. But there is a problem, when playing the mod I get no music, how do I turn it on?
Thanks.

Hmmm... that's odd. I hadn't noticed the lack of music... I'll have to check that out next time I get a chance and see what's up.

What happens is that the intro music plays along when the game starts and then when a new civilization is discovered that civilization music keeps playing in the background but eventually it ends and all you ear is the ambient sound, birds, workers etc.

When you built your mod which civilization music did you choose for Portugal? (that is if you choose any).

Okay, I looked around and it seems the other Civilization mods have a similar problem with music. I guess I hadn't noticed it before because I tend to tune-out the music while I play. I didn't see any threads with a fix for this problem, but I'll keep an eye out for it. I know audio isn't very modable in the game yet, which is why I haven't added any voice-over work.

does this work on the new patch? as every other ive tried doesnt work at all anymore..

This version should work with the new patch... at least it works for me... I took out the code that was causing problems with the patch. If you have any problems let me know.

That's a shame that civilization mods don't play music. I guess a basic mod function would be to assign a particular core civilization music to the new civ mod. I'll keep waiting for a fix for this.

Yeah, there are a lot of problems that the modding community is running into. Thankfully, we have some very smart people who are figuring work-arounds (like Lemmy). Hopefully, someone will figure this one out, too.

I've tried installing the mod twice now from Steam - it does not complete installation, leaving an empty folder in the Mods folder and its uninstalled file at the bottom of my file list in the mods folder. I deleted both of those but the worst part is that this mod keeps showing up in my Steam mods downloads section as "transferred 1 mb/1mb" and I cannot get rid of that annotation, even after clearing the cache file and deleting all mods from the mod folder and reinstalling the ones that I know work. I am not inclined to delete Civ V and reinstall again from Steam just to hopefully clear this up. Any idea of what the problem is?
