Portugal rules Terra maps

not on a no-barbs game ;-). I hate barbs. they make it more realistic, but it seems as tho i get attacked way more than the AI does. screw 'em. It's frustrating and not fun so i turn them off.

That's what the Great Wall's for ;) ...

Although it won't work on overseas colonies...

yeah, Great Wall is a waste for me. I'd rather use those hammers on something else. No one dares attack me in most games which further nerfs the GW. rather turn off barbs all together and focus on the real civs.

Bright day
They will eventually release Brasil, or whatever it is that they release. Plus likely they won't take too much land as barbarians can be quite a mouthfull at first- they will have huge numbers.

Yeah, every spare barb on the continent will come looking for the Portugese settlements. That's why I'm thinking they won't be in a strong enough position to hold off a follow-up attack by the dutch.

Collected works of Florian:
Why would settlers have to wait for galleons? Maybe they'll do it that way, but it won't make any sense. Right now, the carrying limitations on a caravel can be attributed to small hold size. Scouts, explorers, missionaries, and spies are all single people, or small groups. Military units and settling expeditions would be much larger. Any ship that can carry military units should be able to carry settlers.

...

Sure, but so does a military unit.

Just so you know a settler costs 100 hammers. The first military units to cost that much are cavalry/riflemen/grenadiers/cannons/ironclads which are all available at around the same time as galleons. Macemen, trebuchets, pikemen, and opther units that are likely to be transported by a military-accessible caravel are all cheaper.

But, with settlers and workers, food is turned into production, which stops the city growing, but increases the production rate.

I'm looking forward to playing my first game as Portugal on a terra map for that reason. My hunch is that it will work fine on marathon, but on standard speed the window won't be open long enough to stop the Dutch from muscling in.

Maybe that means that if you're Portugal, Crush the Dutch first.

I'm looking for that too! Playing on Terra Map with Portugal would be great to test the new colonial system in the game and to "taste" a good maritime war against the Dutch!

There is also the new trade route system, in Terra maps will be great for testing it!

If it's frustrating rather than fun, better to turn them off than not play. games are for fun.

With East Indiamen at +2 strength and +1 cargo, I figure it will be hard to stop them from pillaging the Portugese trade routes on their way to deliver troops and settlers to the New World.

Of course I want Hannibal and Ragnar in this game, too!

When do the privateers arrive? I'll be saving a Great general for one just to test that, too.:D

wOOt! Carthage, Vikings, Dutch and Portuguese in the same game! Who will control the seas? The new colonial and trade route system will trully make it more fun!

YOU WILL NEVER STOP THE DUTCH!

I will bring Portugal to it's knees!

Ya, I'm really excited to play as the Dutch. Mainly for the Dike :p

You and dutchking (Where is him to defend the Dutch?)

The Dike is really a great UB, better than the portuguese one I think, but I still prefer Portugal ;) :D !

Has anybody actually looked at Portugal on map and compared it to its colonized areas (like Brazil)?

I think you get my point. Caravels carrying settlers would not be overpowered. If anything, it would be appropriate.

Thedrin, have you noticed how we tend to disagree on every single subject conceivable?

Anyway, I was thinking some more about the overseas maintenance increase and the advantage of colonies, and it occurred to me that Portugal's UU, if it CAN carry settlers, would be weakened most by the new maintenance. You can't just set up shop and spam 10 cities anymore. While it is true that they could create colonies, they run the risk of alienating their new citizens and they may get a new civ from a revolution, meaning YOU can go in and take over.

All things considered, even if they can't carry settlers the Carrack is still good--just plop four knights or grenadiers down and take over the barbarian cities. :)

That's why I'm prepared to give them the ax...
but not in the first game .

I need to know if I can take out the East Indiamen with my GG promoted privateer, or if an out of the box one will do.

And we know for a fact that settlers and workers are not encompassed in the phrase "military units"?

Yes, they are "domestics". :king:

Only 11 days left to plan ... What will you take with you in your super-sized, super-powered galleons?

No problemo with the Dutch.... A decent Portuguese player will put all he gots in killing the Dutch, period. All the other naval civs aren't a real threat .
