While making tests to understand the mechanics that cause aliens to turn "hostile" (orange color) and "very hostile" (red color), reported in this topic, I came across an issue that is likely a bug.
Ostensibly attacks from units should cause the "alien opinion" towards the player to degenerate. This is only true insofar as the attacks come from adjacent tiles.
For example a ranger attacking from an adjacent tile will cause a decrease in the "alien opinion" as intended, thus bringing it closer to the threshold that would turn it to "hostile".
The same ranger attacking from two tiles away (i.e. its maximum range) does not cause any changes.
This means that no amount of attacks done from "afar" will cause the aliens to turn "hostile".
As this seems too odd to be intentional, I'm reporting it as a possible bug.
