Hey I just registered to talk about this finding. I didn't see anything about this so sorry if its posted already

First things first my comp specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
512MB ram
Radeon 9800 SE (software modified to PRO)
desktop res 1280x1024
Civ 4 res 1280x1024
Windows XP SP2

Open your civ4 config, if you installed the game to the default path it's C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 in a file called _Civ4Config (it's a shortcut file)

Hit Ctrl + f or go to find and find "; Enable Audio" the line below it make it:
AudioEnable = 0

now find "; Set to 1 for no in-game movies" the line below make it:
NoMovies = 1

Now this means you won't get the movies (EX. wonder movies which crash your game!) and the audio is turned off mostly. These seemed to fix my ram usage from going up and up till my computer crashes.

Done that, but it doesn't stop the game from getting laggy after a couple or three turns. Never had problems with the movies anyway, just gameplay, so it's probably different issues.

That's the dumbest solution I've ever heard. Why not say, "To solve this problem, stop playing Civ 4!"

Make sure all your drivers are up to date, including Graphics card and motherboard chipset (which most people seem to forget but has worked for other players).

i think turning off audio and wonder videos until a patch comes out is a fine recommendation. if you want to wait until a patch comes out to play, then fine. some of us want to play now.

Try turning off the sound acceleration under the sound tab in dxdiag.

I should have said work around not fix -- sorry. But, I've found this has helped but my computer still does freeze at seemingly random times but usually as or a bit after I build my first city. Also I've noticed it doesn't crash with some civs as compaired to others. In window mode my computer resets by it self. Anyways I was hoping maybe someone with the same problem can confirm if it helps.

Yes it sounds like a video driver problem but I'm using the latest ones.
