I was in a game where Japan had been conquered very early on. Roughly 1000 years later I liberated one of his cities and decided to give it back to Japan (re-introducing them to the game) since my unhappiness was already out of control and I didn't need the city anyway.

My understanding was that Japan was supposed to be my "friend for life" according to a video Shafer had done pre-release. As it turns out, Japan denounced me the very next turn. And the turn after that (so only two turns after being liberated), he declared war on me. I think he only had one archer unit which didn't stand up well against my tanks but the point is that I was expecting a friend.

Seems very broken to me. I didn't get a screenshot or save game however.

Thanks.

This was a problem even before the patch where the liberated civ still hates your guts.

The only benefit for liberation is that they will forever vote for you in the UN. They remain otherwise just as likely as ever to be hostile or go to war with you. That is what is meant by "friend for life." Apparently, they will even vote for you if you are at war with them at the same time!

It's nonsensical, but apparently, something according to design rather than a bug (and symptomatic of the horrible design of diplomacy in this game). And this is not new to 1.0.1.135; it's always been this way.
