i have been trying different maps and different settings to find the most enjoyable. i thought it would be a good idea for others to list their favorites to give everyone ideas.

so far i found that i like pagea or continents the best. usually with epic game speed, random personalities, standard or large map, and i usually add a few more civs than the map usually starts with, so if a standard map hase 8 civs i would raise it to 10. i usually play on prince difficulty.

I play on tiny maps (with this size I don't have slowdown problems with my minimum-specs machine). Playing with just 3 civs feels a little empty for me though, so I choose 6-7 civs. So far I mainly played on continent and Pangea maps because I wanted to play the game in its "standard version" first. I think I'll progress to other map types shortly. :)

My difficulty level is Monarch at the moment.

i like:
continents/custom continents (1 per team with everyone different teams,i like only meetin civ's when i choose to)
standard/large map with 6/10 civs respectively
permanent alliances ticked on
and all other settings at default

Huge map with 12 nations. It gets a little choppy towards the end, but makes the exploration and discovery of other nations quite fun. Sometimes I wish you could make the map ever bigger...

Huge continental map, raging barbarians, aggressive ai, no tech trading, no space race or diplomatic victory.

Standard map, continents, 6 Civs total (I prefer the Germans - Frederick), normal barbs, all Victory conditions on.

Dynastic game speed (mod. Research at 350%, so even longer then the mod is normally. Still usually have all techs well before 1900.)
Noble
Terra or many continents
12 Civs
Huge map
Only Conquest victory enabled
'Culture flip to previous owner' enabled.

I play Peter (...but wish there was a Stalin or Lenin).

Yes my games basically go on forever and have no real purpose, but isn't that what life is all about?

;)

How does the 'culture flip to previous owner' work, exactly?

I think that if you don't have this enabled then conquered cities can't flip back to the civ they were just taken from. If left un-enabled, it stops the situation where you have just taken a city and it flips back to the person you took it from. Lots of people didn't like it when that happened, I thought it was fine.

...and I don't think I have quoted the exact name of the option correctly, but I don't have the game with me right now or I'd be playing it!

I play Continents, Large, High Sea Level, Epic. I've seen some options mentioned that I don't seem to have. Such as Natural coastlines, culture flip only to original owner, etc. Where are these, in the worldbuilder?

Standard or Large MAZE map, with a plot size of 1.

this setup makes for a interesting game...

-> City placement requires more thought (many locations only have 2 workable land tiles before cultural growth)

-> even after cultural growth, you may not be able to get to a resource to mine it.

-> resources/luxuries could go to anyone you have no guarantee of getting anything.

-> open border deals suddenly become very important.

give it a go... the early game can be a little slow, especially if you find yourself on a line with no-where to go, but as soon as you can build galleys the whole world is available (if you have open boarders) and remember, if your galley is in a dead end, use an enemy city to hop over some land into a new corridor.

The culture flip one is about 3 options down when you make a custom game. Not in the world builder.

I generally play tiny pangaea with eighteen civs no tech trading and aggresive AI. Also, I have high sea level and the shoreline option that makes it not have any teeny chance of islands around. When I am in for a real challenge I add one city challenge always war. It is almost impossible with those additional settings on noble to win the "Whole World War One". I rarely ever play anything over standard and even that I play rarely because I like fast-paced action.

For something a little different...

Highland map
Dense peaks
Seas
Raging barbarians

Hold the passes! :)

I always use epical speed, standard maps with 14 players, or large maps with 18 players! I like it a bit crowded, and its often difficult to get more then 4-5 cities if you dont start early wars.

I play the prince difficulty.

I would love to play huge maps with 24-30 civs but am afraid my computer woldnt take it...... :(

Huge pangaea, low seas (so more land), pressed shoreline, about 7 civs (more space each), normals barbs, epic speed, all victory conditions, noble difficulty.

Currently playing with random as my leader until I get a flavour of them all - I really liked Kublai though :D

I play on small maps with 7 or 8 civs on epic speed with all victory conditions enabled. The rest changes from game to game.

Currently:

Noble
Standard
Continents/Pangea
6 Other Civs
Standard Victory Conditions

Depending on my taste for going with which victory condition, my Civ changes as well as the map, either continents or pangea.
