Colin Powell expresses his concern about the Arab world not being outraged enough for Nick Berg's murder.

WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) scolded Arab governments Sunday for not expressing more outrage over the videotaped beheading of an American civilian in Iraq

....Powell said he has made clear, specifically to Arab leaders, that systematic torture of prisoners is unacceptable anywhere. Yet, he said, their denunciation of the killing of Nicholas Berg, kidnapped while in Iraq seeking business for his Pennsylvania communication company, fell far short of their attacks on the United States for the treatment of detainees at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison

...Powell, interviewed from Jordan, said he has told Arab leaders, "When you are outraged at what happened at the prison, you should be equally, doubly outraged at what happened to Mr. Berg."

....And we need that same level of outrage and condemnation coming from the Arab world, just as it's coming from us."

....On Fox, Powell said: "Torture of any kind is unacceptable, and Arab leaders need to look at what's happening in their own societies. They need to reform their societies."

I am sure there are plenty of other things to make them angry at the moment.

Yeah he's right, all those elected leaders in they realms of due process really should show more respect for human lifes, like they usually do. :crazyeye:

"And we need that same level of outrage and condemnation coming from the Arab world, just as it's coming from us."

I think they are imitating Mr. Wolfowitz quite well...

Let us be real...(be real son)...if the "Arab" leaders expressed outrage over every American death, in the middle east, they'd be a bunch of outraged mofos, all of the time. Twenty-four hours a day, they'd be outraged. This is all silly. These kind of things need to be expected in a war/occupation such as this. You should expect a few bad apples to abuse prisoners, you should expect a few soldiers to die, you should expect a few innocents to be killed, whether intentionally or purposely. It happens in EVERY war.

What really saddens me was the Swiss didn't appoligize enough for our torture of the Iraqis... not. It's just as dumb to expect the Arab community to go on like a three year mourning. It's one man, killed by Al Qaeda. Brutally. But they weren't members of government, they were just Arabs.

The gasoline tank is nearby. First to throw in the lit match gets the surprise award!

@Drunk Master: Khomeini? He had quite a few civilian Iraqis killed himself, and never expressed any regret, still less anger, thereover himself.

I think that's because he wasn't the agressor in the conflict, that was Saddam backed by the some western countries.

I just wanted to say, if you expect the Arab world to be outraged over the dead of Nick Berg you have a lack of knowledge about the masses in the Arab world.

Sure people didn't like to see it, but they see a lot of violance on tv that they don't like. Most of it coming from the Americans.

This discussion is useless when neither side can rightfully claim the moral high ground.

Nick Berg was Jewish. 'Nuff said.
exactly, what would they care about a dead American civilian anyways? They might when that ICBM is 30 seconds away from Mecca... but...

He could have been a Ukrainian, he was still Jewish. Why should the Arabs be outraged? They won't even let Jews into their countries.

Khomeini's claim to the moral high ground went to hell when he tried to turn the affair into a conquest of Iraq. Anayway, I won't believe he made that statement till you conjure up some fairly well-respected source.

I'm not positive how bringing in supposed, extremely hypocritical, statements of Khomeini's helps getting that point across.

We don't get outraged at all the dead mothers and children blown to atoms in our glorious liberation of Iraq.

So why would these jihadists care about one guy...?

I doubt it's specifically the jihadists that Mr Powell is looking for anger from.

That said, I can't say I am feeling any special outrage over Mr Berg's fate. He's just yet another casualty who happened to meet a photogenic end.

It's funny though you would of thought by know the whole Muslim world would of erupted, but they are all asleep (Bliss). I don’t think even Nuking Mecca is going to walk them up.

The Arabs have failed and it’s only a matter of time before they give up Mecca and median! :mischief:

The muslim world fall asleep?

Man they are angry as hell. And not on the killers of Nick Berg obviously.

btw Khomeini never said, it was just a way of saying something.
