Some of you probably already do this and maybe it was discussed at some time, but if I'm building a wonder that I want to get before another civ tags it - several rounds before I am ready to build the wonder, I pick the city that I want to build it in and start building a palace.

Once the tech is gotten and the wonder is ready to tee-up, I switch the palace that is still in construction to the wonder - getting a jump on the building of the wonder with the shields invested in the palace.

Yeah, everyone, I'm pretty sure, does it. There is a variant rule in which you attempt to build without switching projects, but most 'normal' games are played with prebuild placeholders when possible.

Hail everyone! Ok, everyone except me uses placeholders. As a newbie with only a few games of Civ3 vanilla under my belt Im still learning the tricks of the trade. Actually I havent really gotten into building many wonders but this info will help.

And if you hit 'What's the big picture' (or equivalent, I don't recall off the top of my head) when you're finished discovering that tech, you can hit the F1 key to go over to the Domestic Advisor, find that city, and switch production before going through the build orders for your city. This way you can have the city doing the prebuild 'finish' the wonder on the same turn you discover the tech that allows it.

I also use this method when I finish a unit advance, so I can start pumping out the new unit that turn, or a turn earlier. And if you have the patience, you can switch over to the F3 Military advisor screen and start upgrading the units there....

Okay, maybe that's exploitive, but if they're gonna allow me to do this, I'm going to take advantage of it. ;)

Hey, I'll almost always switch at least a majority of my cities to building sword units (or their UU equivalent) upon connecting an iron tile, or immediately upon learning Ironworking if there's already iron connected.
