"Preferred Government"?

Hello All,
I was curious if somebody could elaborate on the whole concept of "Preferred Governments" for particular Civs.
For example, I play as the Germans, and I've read that their preferred government is the Republic.

I was wondering what advantages would I gain if I stay in Republic rather than moving up to Democracy.

Anyone got any comments on this?
Thanks

To answer that question on it's own, 'not much'.
Republic and Democracy are very similar.
R has 'low' unhappiness in war, D has 'high'.
D has slightly lower corruption.
D's workers have a 50% bonus.
D is immune to propaganda (an utterly useless bonus)

As a rule of thumb (especially if you aren't Religious and are Industrious) it's not worth moving to D unless you're sure war ain't gonna happen.

I don't know if this is correct or not, but it's consistant with what I've seen. The AI government preferences don't influence their government choices (for example, Egypt dislikes democracy IIRC but doesn't seem to hesitate to become a democracy) but instead their reaction to other civs. That is, Egypt should react a little better to a rival civ that's a despotism, and be more hostile to a rival that's a democracy.

As for changing from republic to democracy, I usually will, but if war seems likely, stick with republic.

I'm not sure if it's related to the items in the editor or not, but I've noticed relations changing after switching Govts.

The help notes in the bic file editor say that the AI civs will switch to the preferred government automatically when it becomes available. From what I've seen this is basically true, but they won't switch if they are at war, and their current gov't is working ok. After they switch to the preferred gov't, if it's not working out, they will switch to another one that does.

I think you're right about this. Other civs seem to like me more as a democracy than under communism. Although this might be because i switch to communism while i'm at war. :D

Only on a very few instances have I ever seen a civ that thought for itself. If your playing with 16 civs, than, 9 times out of 10, you will see 16 Republics followed by 16 Democracies. This is really annoying and adds to the feeling of all the civs being the same...

That's my experience. AI seems to make govt decisions based on war-not war from what I've seen. & they've tended to go to Democracies since they trade so much. That is, until I get some trade embargos going...
