My only rules were no districts except city centers and preserves, under deity and defaultish settings. Defaultish because I've preferred Pangaea and online speed for a very long time, and I also had the SS, H&L, M&C, and BC modes enabled because I like them (This seems to be a popular combo, actually). I use some mods as you can tell but they're all UI/cosmetic.

I looked around afterward and saw someone did it with Inca which makes sense, but I'm glad I went with Teddy because the speedier tech/civic progress from his abilities fit well into my win condition (conservation and steel). I was unfortunate enough to spawn on some floodplains and a lot of rainforest, but fortunate enough to be pretty walled in by CSes to the north and mountains and more CSes to the south. John Curtin attacked me with vampires and Hercules early on but the chokepoint was rough on him. Aside from that, some barbarians going crazy with men-at-arms and coastal units, and Jadwiga wanting nothing to do with me for a while (I needed a level 3 religious alliance with her real bad), I had no other significant setbacks.

Anyway this was fun to figure out on a pre-planning level, even if there wasn't a ton of decision work with what to produce or research. I recommend people spend some time on weird challenge runs like this because this game is usually really flexible with the different strategies you can get away with even on deity.

Kupe gets shellacked again.

That's a really good challenge, thanks for documenting it. Having the ability to faff around with obscure gameplay methods is one of the things that make this game lots of fun and adds to longevity.

I think most are disabling C & M now because monopolies are broken as all Hell.

I was thinking of trying something like this as Kupe.

Looked up the tourism modifier for that and yeah I see what you mean lol. Too bad too, I've appreciated the additional source of great merchant points and means of turning incense into okay tiles.

Really fun and interesting playthrough to see- thanks for posting it. Seems like BM Teddy is particularly, maybe uniquely well suited for such an approach? But I never would've thought it possible to be so wildly successful with Preserves only.

How do you think it would fare without any of the adjunctive modes (especially no SS, no C+M) ?

Probably; you don't get a lot of culture or science otherwise with no districts, religion, or the diplo quarter. Off the top of my head I'm sure Gilgamesh could do it land permitting, Menelik with Voidsingers, Mansa Musa if he gets enough golden ages and alliances for his trade routes to be really good.
I'm sure it's possible with no modes; Voidsingers is the only one that strikes me as really good for it outside of Owls' policy slots and I think Teddy at least could manage without it. I was all ready to set all the cities to that Voidsingers project to go overboard with faith, but I won shortly before the era that unlocks it lol.
