Preview of Nick Dowling's "Battle of Australia"
Battle of Australia is a hypothetical scenario: "What if the Japanese had won Midway, and the U.S. Navy would've withdrawn from the area to repair and rebuild?" Australia would be exposed to the largest human threat in the area in centuries: Japan and its navy with the highly-motivated infantry. Problems for Australia.
Though Japan never invaded Australia in reality, the Australian government greatly feared an invasion in 1942, after Japan had taken over almost every island near Australia and raided Darwin and Sydney-harbor with its navy. It may be clear that this scenario is about the invasion that didn't come. In your first turn (as Australians), the Japanese will land mostly in the northeastern regions of Australia, and you probably lose 5-6 cities in turn #1. You will have to put a lot of effort into making a stand against the invaders; a stalemate is quite difficult to achieve, but after you did that, you can build up troops and wait for a good moment for counter-attack. Both Japanese and Australians get reinforcements by events during the game, which should help the Australians to hold the Japanese invasion in the end.
The graphics used in the scenario are good. The units created by Nick Dowling himself are the AC1 Sentinel, the AC4 , Wirraway, Boomerang, and the Hudson. The last three were created by editing Allard Höffelt's units. The graphics created a nice environment and atmosphere that is, in my opinion, suitabnle for this scenario. For all WWII-scenario fanatics, this
scenario is a nice change in historical point of view. Just play it yourself!
