Ok so I've never modded anything before, went to watch the tutorial and it lagged like hell. So I'm just going to ask(this might not even require a mod)

I want to change the name of the leaders. So instead of saying George Washington it will say "John Smith"(just an example) I want to do this with all the civs in my game. After that is done I can just go into worldbuilder and do as I wish, but that is the most crucial part of my idea.

Any help is great:goodjob:

You will have to edit the text file. It is located in Assets/AML/Text/and then go to the file you want. I belive it is called text_objects. Once you are in there just do a search (ctrl+f) and find the needed entry

Ok now say I do it and change all the civ names to what I want. If I save that game to a CD and give it to my friend will he see the names as I put it?

Edit: When I go into Assets I see:assets0.fpk, assets 1.fpk and so on till 3. So I'm lost

Yes, if you create a proper mod for it.

Look in the games install directory, not the directory you find in my documents.

Thanks! I found some text files under xml. but I dont know what to change

Edit: BTW I'm running on warlords, so I do need to edit both civIV and Warlords?

To me this is what I should do:
CivIV
1. Assets=XML=Text=Civ Leaders=Change a bunch of stuff hopefully you guys will tell me lol
Go into Warlords
2. Assets=XML=Text=Changed file, then change stuff

Am I right? I'm not touching anything until you all clear me lol

Edit warlords for warlords names and core civ for core civ names.
EG: If you want to rename mehmet, look in warlords. If you want to rename washington, look in core civ. Also, you should copy any files that you will be changing into a mod. Never alter core files.

So I just select everything, copy it, paste it into mods, change it and save?

make sure you have the files in the same directory you found them in but in a mod. EG:
the text files would be in mods/modname/assets/xml/text/text files.

No, first go into the mods directory, create a folder. Then create folders so that the text files can go where they would go in core civ, it is the same directory above. Then you are set.

So create a new folder, then put a folder inside that called Assets, then a folder inside that called XML, then one inside that called Text and save my text file their? Do I need to do anything else?

Nope. Good luck. Make sure that they are in mods folder.

So I was just gonna follow my instincts and instead of going into the text civleaders file id go into the civilizations, civleadersheadinfos document instead. The text file was just the discription on each civ. Tell me if I'm wrong on that one.

Also when I went to paste the civ leaders file into word it freezes word....like 4 times. Edit: I think I fixed this. Just need to know if the paragraph above is correct :D

Dont use that, that only refers you to the text file. Also, you have to use notepad or an xml editor, not word. There are a bunch of XML tutorials in the tutorial sub-forum. They go into alot more depth there.

I tried one and it lagged.

That was the vidoe tutorial by Kael, correct? All other tutorials (with the exception of 2 tutotials on animating and modeling new units) are text only. After reading the tutorials, and still cant figure it out, I'll set a mod up for you.

Thanks, I set up a thread requesting one, cuz I give up, im not a patient person

What specificly do you not understand? XML isnt that hard. I learnt it in a matter or minutes, but it took me a while to get halfway decent.

Dont know what to change, where to find it, what else I need to save. I need my hand held through the whole process. I have too much going on to really look into it.

You change the text in the next file, but not the TXT_KEY_... entries right above it. To save you just go file save. I already told you how to make a mod folder and where to pu the files. If it is self contained, it cant screw up the game (minor problem I had with the res file nonwithstanding) and if by bome freak occurance it does, you can delete the mod or simply do a update via the control menu on your computer.
