Problem with cultural victory conditions?

Were the original cultural victory conditions changed from original CIV IV to different conditions for either Warlords or Beyond the Sword?

Tonight I was playing a single player BtS (latest patch) custom game, huge map, no mods, with "Always Peace" and all victory conditions "on". I am playing in a Pitboss game and I was thinking of going for a cultural win instead of my usual space race strategy. I thought I was going to win, but was beaten by Montezuma who got the cultural victory before me.

Thinking this odd, I used the worldbuilder feature and checked his cities: He had 1 city over 50,000 and the other ones were approximately at 26,600 and 25,100. I had 2 over 50,000 and another at 18,000+ and increasing rapidly.

I thought you had to have 3 cities over 50,000 to win a cultural victory on normal settings and at noble level. Have I missed something, since I normally do not go for cultural victories? Or was this a fluke?

I remember looking at one of my cities when it was at 28,000 and it was listed as Legendary. I thought this was just stating the next level at 50,000 was Legendary, but now I am not so sure. It looked to me as if 25,000 or 26,000 was the point value the game was looking for.

If I had manually saved the game, I would send the file to one of you to take a look at, but unfortunately I did not. My son started a new game and it saved over the autosave saved game file, so there is no way to retrieve the game now.

Thanks for any help you can give.

PS: I also noticed great artists were giving something like 2680 points each, in the game, when I used them to bump up the cultural value of my cities. I remember, in the original CIV IV, the point value for a great artist was 4,000 or 5,000?

The culture required to achieve legendary status changes depending on the game speed.

I know that at normal speed it's 50,000 and at epic it's 75,000, so I'm guessing that at quick speed it's down at 25,000 which is what you are seeing. I've never played a game at quick speed (or whatever it's called) so I can't confirm this, but the values seem to bare this out.

I will check it out, but I thought I always played at Standard/normal/default speed. Though my son may have changed it for some reason.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully this is the case.

UPDATE: You were correct Woodgar. Somehow it was on "Quick" research speed. I should have noticed how quickly I was getting techs. I must have been more tired than I thought!

Once again my sincerest thanks!

"Quick" is more than a research speed, it speeds up everything but movement and turn-minimums. Your Workers should have been building things a lot faster, your city production should have been completed a lot sooner, and you should have seen the culture required for a first pop happen really soon, at 5 culture, as the most noticeable effects, other than flying through research and years.

And here I thought it was just my brilliant game play!

That's what I get for playing the game between 2 am and 5 am. Darned Insomnia is not very conducive to the practice or study of anything.

BTW: I enjoyed reading your article on popping borders. It gave me a few things to try.
