Problemes with installing expansion beyond the sword

[Civilisation 4]

When I tried to install the expansion it said their was a patch for Civilisation IV and when it tried to install the patch it said that it could'nt find the patch and it just closed the whole installation of the expansion, so I tried installing the patch from the web site but then it said that it could'nt find the game of Civilisation IV. Also Civilisation IV is installed on the computer and it will let me play it. So what should I do?

Uninstall and reinstall civ4Vanilla. Don't patch it.
Then install civ4BTS.

I tried that but when I go to reinstall the expansion it does'nt give me a choice about the patch.

The BTS, didn't it get installed at all?

Does your civ4vanilla requires patch to be installed, or not? You probably bought civ4gold.

Are your basic game and the expansion both in the same format: both CDs or both downloads? If they are not the same, the expansion will be looking for the game in the wrong location.

Automatically download you say? Try turning the internet off. Try everything you think might be possible.

So i bought the civilisation IV as a download, and the expansion is on a disc. So is their a way to fix this so that I can instal the expansion

If you have the Civ 4 as a download you will not get a disc version of BTS to work. Even download versions from different sources usually don't work. You need to get all parts of the game from the same source. Your best bet is to wait for a sale and pick up complete - I found Complete (including Colonisation) for £2.75 from Steam in a Christmas sale when my BTS disc died.
