The world is not enough
I have recently been trying to conquer the world as early as possible in a normal size world at deity level instead of aiming for a big score since this should take less time (but actually it doesn't since the number of games increases...). My record is 1530 AD. My strategy is to build lots of cities early on with overlapping city radius. By doing this I get at least two times as many cities by 1 AD as I do by aiming for big cities
by having no overlap. This means I can easily fight two or even three major wars at the same time and I get way ahead of the AI both economically and in science.
However my 1530 AD record doesn't look impressive compared to some of the finishing dates I've seen here. One of my big problems is "new" civs that appear when I eliminate the "original" civs. These can be difficult to find since at first they consist of a single city at an often obscure location. So I have to establish a big "intelligence network" consisting of lots explorers and diplomats/spies occupying every landmass/island in the world. Even this doesn't seem to be sufficient as there seems to be a bug involving the appearance of new civs. If I destroy a civ a settler of the same color appears somewhere (this is normal). If I have a military unit nearby and kill it a new settler from the *same* civ
sometimes (possibly always) immediately appears somewhere else. This can be a huge problem if the settler doesn't found a city soon since in that case it seems impossible (or at least extremely difficult) to eliminate this particular civ !! The same thing applies if I destroy a city on the same turn (and possibly next turn as well) it is founded - a settler from the same civ may appear somewhere else. Has anyone seen this bug (?) and how do you deal with it ?
Also for these extremely early finishing dates (centuries before my 1530 AD finish): Do you turn on the "Don't Restart Eliminated Players" option ?
