Problems running Civ3 Complete on a new laptop

When playing the game with other civilizations, the screen goes white-blank for about half a minute up to a minute at the end of every turn. Especially when a battle starts, it just goes blank and quiet and I can't see which unit won or what is happening until the next turn.

This happens at both, native and custom resolutions, and makes the game unplayable. If I push any button, Windows 7 tells me that the application stopped responding and asks me if I want to close it. Is there any way to fix it?

I'm not familiar with that problem. What OS & version are you running? How did you install Civ3? (Steam, Complete, original vanilla/PTW/Conquests CDs, etc.)

You could temporarily try running Civ3 in WinXP SP3 compatibility mode or run as administrator to see if those make difference.

If I run it in compatibility mode (even Windows 7 compatibility works versus Windows 7 native), it slows down like I've just switched to a 486 and makes the game completely unplayable.
