Problems with internet game

Hi, I am connected from to a LAN. Me and my friend are tying to play internet game. We played LAN games before.

When we try to play over the net (internet game) the host machine is "waiting for players", but the joiners dosen`t seem to find the hoster.. We only get the message "We are waiting for the game machine to connect". But nothing more happens... we have tried ipconfig from the command prompt, and tried to ping each other.. that didn`t work... but when we tried a IP site (found in this site) we found out that we had other IP adresses. When we tried to ping then, we found each other.. but still we can`t connect to each other?...
We both uses WIN XP.

Anyone have an idea of how to get connected without having to sit in the same house connectet to a switch? (LAN)??

Err, forgot to say that we are using Multiplayer Gold edition....

Ive had this before, try using the other computer to serve. Is it two comp's together without router or hub? if so make sure you have a cross cable.
