Problems with KOTOR

So I bought Knights of the Old Republic for $5 from D2D, and it installed fine and works completely fine - that is, until I start the game. I get a black screen with a blue mouse pointer and nothing happens, until eventually I get the error report message. This happens every single time, and I have no idea why. Just to make sure, I tried starting up Civ (which I bought from D2D) and it worked like a charm.

Anybody know what's up?

You need to have Directx9 installed. If you use Vista/Win7, you have to download it. Even then, prepare for a buggy playing experience. KOTOR has massive memory leaks.

I already installed the DirectX that came with the download.

I run XP, and I meet all the system reqs and I've reinstalled it twice.

Hmm, it's supposed to cause less problems under XP.
Setting Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1 in the ini was supposed to help as well, but never did anything for me.

What does the error message say? I have a problem with that on my computer, it seems to think I don't ave OpenGL 1.3 (When I have OpenGL 3.0 and the latest drivers), yet it works fine on my laptop (though on medium graphics) which runs on an Intel 4500M.

Also, don't install the DirectX version the game prompts, its pointless. Just use the latest DirectX 9c version from Microsoft's website.

I can't find an accelerator to download for my graphics card. It's an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M (crappy, I know).

Yeah, I just realized I installed the regular drivers, not the accelerator.

I think it's an accelerator, but there may not be one for such a low-quality video card.

The videocard is hardly low quality since its still working after half a decade

@Zack: could you tell us what the error says, we might be able to help you better if you do.

It just says that SWKOTOR has encountered an error and needs to close. Doesn't say any more than that.

have you tried playing with everything disabled/lowest possible settings?

Yes. Newer LucasArts games work, other D2D games work... I have no idea what the problem is.

Well if your hardware passes the SWConfig Utility tests and can play newer games its almost certainly a software problem.

Have you tried disabling as many background programs as possible?

Yes. I've posted this on other forums as well, and none of the fixes worked. I really don't know what to do. Why isn't my video card working properly for a game from 2003 when it handles World in Conflict like a charm?

Extremely strange. Does your video card have a catalyst (radeon's name for it, I'm not sure what it'd be called for yours) program?

I tried downloading ATI Tray Tools, but it isn't working properly - and neither did the download you linked to.

Try driver sweeper Clean out your system and reinstall the drivers. Try installing the latest drivers from your motherboard manufacturer.

Although you shouldn't be able to play World in Conflict on a ATI Radeon Xpress 200M IGP since that IGP does not support DirectX9c.

This issue happens quite a lot, I see. But the causes of these issues lie in different places. First, please check if you've got your chipset drivers/graphics card drivers updated (please see this for the Intel Chipset family). The issue can happen due to the use of incompatble settings as well, though this cause would be rare. Make sure you use all basic settings and use the correct refresh rate (60 Hz in most cases).

Also, are you using any modifications and has this issue happened before, or not? It could also be that your graphics card doesn't meet the minimum requirements. Make sure to do a system scan for that. And one last thing- what Service Pack are you running with XP?
