Problems with Recycle Bin.

I have a strange problem on my computer (XP system) - when I try to empty the bin it doesn't empty itself, in fact, it doesn't even display the confirmation dialog. It just hangs up for 5 seconds or so, showing intense disk activity during that time. So far I've set all files to be deleted immediately.

Opening the bin doesn't show any files inside, but the bin graphics shows as full.

So, does anyone know what might be causing this and is there any way to empty it?
