I give you Mechanized Infantry in 755 AD.

No cheats were used. This unit was created with multiple upgrades found in ancient ruins in an archipelago world. It can single-handedly eliminate any opposing civ.

They can just make it so that a unit can only get upgraded once and then it can't acquire any more upgrades from ancient ruins.

To say this is "proof of poor game balance" is to grossly overstate the point. It's proof that there's a poorly thought-out feature, but one feature does not game balance make.

Or at least if the ruins limited you to one era ahead of where you are now, that would be a bit more fair.

I can win the game with this single unit. I would call that a game balance issue.

I would like to know what the next ruins will bring. GDR?
Not sure. After this screnshot, I did the "reload the game and wait a turn if you don't get what you want from a hut" trick on the last set of ruins on the map, but gave up after seven reloads.

In order to get that mech infantry, you would have needed to get very, very lucky with all your huts, and at the expense of getting other advantages of huts.

Also, I'm not convinced about how easily you could win the game with that single unit. Even if you did, it would still be because you were very lucky.

And last of all, if you really don't like it, you could always turn off the ruins.

You're telling me you hit multiple unit upgrade huts before 750 AD?

I have to be honest. I've :):):):) myself when I get two upgrade and land at pikemen. I hardly even find one. When you start your game change your difficulty from Settler to King.

Don't be so smug. It's just a little thing that can happen if you are EXTREMELY lucky. It's not game-breaking by a long shot.

While its only game breaking a small percentage of the time, it is still a game breaking event.

Lets put the equivalent in Civ IV. What if there was a random event (with a very small chance of happening) that gave 3 cities in a civ legendary culture.

Would that be game breaking? Absolutely.

I had an infantry once when everyone else was using spearmen. They do need to remove this. Completely lucky is not a good enough way to explain it away based on the number of reports I've seen.

I don't believe I was incredibly lucky. I think this will be seen to be a common problem in a standard or larger archipelago world. This unit had the opportunity to sail around the world picking up more than a dozen ancient ruins from uninhabited/city-state islands. There were even islands that other civs had colonized, yet hadn't bothered to explore the ruins.

I tested this last night. This single unit was able to conquer city after city of my strongest AI opponent.

This seems like semantics. I think we both agree this reward needs a visit by the nerf bat. I think some of the suggestions on this thread are good ones.

I can? Ah, excellent. A good idea.

One fix for this would be to have units that get upgraded via ruins to get an "Advanced Tech" promotion. If a unit has this promotion it instead it gets a free promotion.

You know, I had the same bug happen to me WAY back in Civ1. ;) I got it from a goody hut and conquered the world with it. I believe this may be in the bug reports thread already. Funny thing is, my mech inf also spawned on an island.

Its cause you are playing on an Arch map. The AI currently doesn't do much water exploration. On a regular continents, earth, or terra map your odds of getting a mech infantry like that are probably 1 in a 1000.

I got this same bug. Got a cannon off of it.

Had a similar one in civ II where a goody hut gave me a tank.
