Proof Of Poor Game Balance

I think that when you start in 4000 BC, finding advanced weapons in some ruins is pretty silly anyway. I could maybe understand bronze weapons, but finding anything more advanced than that is just weird. It's like saying "Oh, this ancient civilization of cavemen hunted woolly mammoths with rifles".

Instead of upgrading the unit, it should probably do the same thing it did in Civ IV and Colonization; Give the unit free EXP to use on upgrades.

How about it gives an upgrade, but it won't upgrade any unit that you currently do not have the technology to build.

This lets you get a unit that is 1 notch better than whatever tech you have.

I'm fine with upgrading Warriors to Spearmen and Scouts to Archers, but anything beyond that is silly. I rolled through a previously-inaccessible part of the world with Cavalry the other day, hit Ruins, and got a Tank. Somehow, there was a Tank division sitting around in the Andes for the past 5500 years. :crazyeye:

It could just do a simple check against your unit, and if you're anything beyond the two starter units, it takes the "advanced weapons" option out of the pool. That way, you can get it with Warriors and Scouts (when it's fun and balanced) and not with Riflemen and Tanks (when it's silly and unfair).

AI is terrible at navigating through islands so its no surprise you got all the ancient ruins. Worst I've seen in a huge map was a rifleman around ~1330.

Yeah, the exploration AI on archipelago maps is just terrible. I'm playing my first game on one of those maps atm and the AI simply doesn't go after any of those huts off their own island.

They should just put a cap on the highest level units you can upgrade to on those huts anyways, and if your exploring unit is at that cap it should give you something else. Even if was in the modern era, and you were exploring a hut with a tank and it upgraded you to a modern armor, it'd be ridiculous obviously.

They should just give you a free promotion (or two) to the unit instead of an upgrade. It certainly wouldn't be as impressive, but it would be in-line with the other possible rewards.

They should just make a cap for promotions, so that they are just able to come within your current and following Era.

Which means theres no Panzer in the stone age, but maybe a middle age unit..
