Me = powerful Arabian Islamic religious wave rolling over all of the continent. Boudicca started buddhism, had her three little cities converted to it, but then Rome captured her capital and I converted it to Islam. Then I converted her other two cities to Islam for good measure, even though she still held them (life's a beach, Boudie!).

Not long thereafter, I see a buddhist prophet reconverting those cities (and a couple nearby Roman ones) back to buddhism! So I go back with a prophet and nuke them all to 100% Islam, no surviving leftover buddhists in any of them.

What do I see a while later? Sure 'nuff, another buddhist prophet converting her cities back. What gives? There wasn't a single buddhist citizen alive on the planet, yet one of her two remaining towns keeps popping out buddhist prophets. I KNOW a player can't do this, as you have to have a city that is officially aligned with your religion before you can buy a prophet there. This was certainly not the case for Boudicca. And no, she does not have any hidden buddhist cities that I didn't notice. I looked ;-)

So is this an AI cheat I didn't know about? Buddha arising from the dead? Throughout this whole episode, Rome had possession of her capital/holy city, so I know she couldn't have pulled any shenanigans from there... so what's going on here?

If she has enough faith for a great prophet she will pop one and it will have her original religion. Although I though you had to still control your holy city but perhaps not.

Which is cheating, as a player can't do that.

Indeed. And quite annoying. Fortunately, Caesar provided the final solution- he took her last two cities and I converted them all with extreme prejudice. They never expect the Arabian Inquisition!!

Actually, the human player has the same ability. Most often happens when you haven't spread your religion beyond your holy city and it gets zapped by a foreign Great Prophet. Generate enough faith for another GP and you can reconvert your holy city to your religion.

It's another AI cheating. The only way to deal with it is to having tons of cities following your religion around enemy's Holy City. That way his GP will not convert enough populance for his religion to be self-sufficient.

Unless you use an inquisitor on a captured holy city that religion will live on. A holy city with a great temple built in it will quickly regain it's religion again, unless an insane amount of pressure is being applied by you. The AI doesn't seem to use this tactic when it takes holy cities, especially if it hadn't founded a religion in the first place. Another though is Boudicca had bought an inquisitor before the conversion then rush bough a great profit.

The reason this probably happened is that Great Prophets are not always bought, they can be earned with Faith. When this happens and you have a religion, the GP's religion is the religion of the person who spawned it. If Boudicca was alive somewhere and acquired 500 Faith prior to the Industrial era (I think?) she could generate a prophet for her religion.

EDIT: Same thing, I think, for GPs spawned by the Piety policy tree and also I think for Hagia Sophia.

It doesn't matter if the GPs are bought or automatic... In either case they are the religion of the civ and not the city

Yes, it's the same for all GPs - including Liberty and Piety finishers, Pisa and Hagia Sophia.
