"Propaganda is the promotion of ideas that further one's own cause or that damage an opponent's cause.. Throughout the history of the world, and wars between nations, propaganda has been employed and is a very efficient weapon during the time of war. Propaganda directly affected the outcome of World War II. Each nation, allied and axis, had its own propaganda campaign that they used against the nations they were at war with. The Americans propaganda campaign was very effective, as they basically told the American citizens what to do. The Axis also used a very effective propaganda campaign by stating that they were superior and kept using the Aryan German as a way of keeping Germans thinking that they were better than everyone else. Their idea of the superior Aryan race was the main propaganda campaign that they employed. The axis and the allied both carried out horrific campaigns of propaganda that made stories of the enemy exaggerated.
Propaganda is defined as "The spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person." Propaganda was used extensively in World War II by both the Allied nations and the Axis nations. The history of propaganda is quite amazing, as it dates as far back as cavemen. "One of the major uses of art, dating back to prehistoric times, is as a tool for propaganda." This is a very interesting idea and it is quite true. Many cavemen painted pictures of themselves on a wall that depicted themselves. One known cave painting is that of warrior who has a very spectacular outfit and the message is pretty clear that he does not wish to be messed with. Propaganda hasn't really changed much over the last thousand years. The general idea of propaganda is to depict an idea that will hurt the enemy and make your side of the argument seem more valid. One of the more famous pre-modern times is a propaganda poster that Benjamin Franklin himself made. It shows eight parts of a snake and underneath it says "Join, or Die." This means that if they don't combine their forces against the British, they will never be able to be their own country. This worked very well as the states combined and, as we know, defeated the British in the American Revolution. Propaganda even exists in non-war times! Posters depicting the great expansion west (California Gold Rush) showed a promise of riches beyond one's wildest dreams. Of course, this was necessary as many people didn't want to give up their homes in already established homes. Some of these propaganda posters helped influence people in the line and they moved west thus expanding the United States.
Some of the more common propaganda campaigns of the modern world is during World War II were employed bye the Axis nations, especially the Germans, otherwise known as the Nazi power. They went through any means possible to discredit any particular race of humans that they didnt like. Jewish people, gypsies, gays and a number of others were all discriminated against as well as tortured and killed because of their background. These people were dehumanized. This is the process by which humans are made to be less than human, or given uncomplimentary animal traits (tripod). An element that was key to the Axis powers, especially Germany, was using wartime propaganda in the use of dehumanization. Since some of the more violent acts that occur in war are carpet bombing a city, completely leveling it, portraying the enemy as less than human, it is much easier to motivate your troops to kill or your pilots and to have your pilots bomb cities like Paris and London. One of the main propaganda campaigns that Hitler and the Germans used was to show that all the powers of Europe, including the Russians, were ganging up on Germany and plotting its downfall. Since this was actually believed by the German citizens and military men, they believed they had a right to attack and start World War II. A belief that the Germans held was that they were a superior race to everyone else. So this could make one think, if humans from one race begin to judge another race in a point of view like this, such as dehumanization, could racial cleansing be close behind? The Germans obviously thought so as they persecuted many different races in what is now known as the Holocaust. Because of their views on other races and through the use of propaganda, they believed and thought that it was a noble thing to do because the government got them convinced through the use of propaganda.
One of the more famous users and deliverers of propaganda was the mastermind behind the German propaganda machine was Joseph Goebbels. He constructed many of the German propaganda posters and speeches. Speeches given by Adolf Hitler, the German Führer, were usually written or at least looked over by Goebbels. This was because he was the main man in charge of propaganda and had to go to whatever lengths it took to get the German people on the side of the war. As put by one man, master propagandist of the Nazi regime and dictator of its cultural life for twelve years. Goebbels had a troubling childhood, even though he excelled in school. Polio, which crippled his foot, got him rejected from military assignment in World War I which haunted him deeply. Goebbels would soon find that his main mission in life would be to sell the myth of Hitler to the German public in hopes that it would get him elected. This, in turn, would get Goebbels into position to eradicate what he hated most in the world. Goebbels disliked the human race in general, but if you get down to specifics, he absolutely despised the Jews in particular. Adding to this, his cynicism was an expression of his own intellectual self-hatred and poor quality of himself.
Of course, Goebbels was one of Hitlers most trusted men. This was because he carried out many of Hitlers tasks and this included many violent and disgusting things. In Berlin, 1933, he started and continued a bonfire that burned many of the great Jewish works at the time, and it would become known as burning of the books. . In another sadistic mood, he had Kristallnacht planned and executed. This was when many of the SS began to persecute Jewish and other minorities out in the open. They lit fire to businesss, burned down houses and did everything imaginable wrong. This all came back at him, though; as he committed suicide because he wouldnt take the reigns after Hitler killed his self. Sickening enough, he even killed his 6 children through lethal injection and had his wife shot by an SS orderly.
Propaganda affected the outcome of World War II for a variety of reasons. First off, the war started partly from the use of propaganda. Goebbels showed the German citizens that Europe was planning the destruction of Germany and that they should unite against the oppressors and show their independence. Goebbels soon made hundreds of posters and speeches leading up to the start of the war and all the while gained political influence and credibility throughout his country. Another example is that of the allies, specifically, the United States. One of the main propaganda campaigns used by both sides was that of War Bonds. These were propaganda because they were telling the United States citizens what to do with there money and why they should spend it. On some of these posters are pictures of men at war or pictures of Hitler and various reasons why you are supporting him. Much of this propaganda was used to counter propaganda used by the enemy. So if the allies made a poster depicting Hitler as some monster, the Nazis would respond in a similar fashion. Soon, the allied propaganda won out because they had better pictures, and psychological warfare. People in Germany, as well as America, were getting upset and were afraid of what might happen. After nuclear weapons were developed, a frenzy started because Germany was afraid they would be used against them. After the nuking of the Japanese, the Germans were more or less pushed into peace with the world.
Propaganda directly affected the outcome of World War II and has been one of the leading factors of war ever since the age of the Stone Age. Drawings on the wall, and stories written to discredit other nations and stories written to exaggerate happenings have been passed down from civilization to civilization. From the American Revolution to both World Wars and even up to modern times, propaganda affected us and continues to affect us to this day. From television and cave paintings to computers and posters, propaganda has come a long way. Of course, it still has the same basic meaning it had when it was first invented. Trick the enemy into thinking what you want him to think and you can go a long way.
